Job description

YMCA Camp Icaghowan in Amery, WI is hiring enthusiastic and responsible Overnight Camp Counselors for Summer 2026. Counselors work in pairs to support cabins of 10-12 campers, facilitate daily activities, and help create a safe, engaging camp experience during Sunday-Thursday sessions. Staff training runs June 4-12, with the summer season from June 14-August 19. Pay is $80 per day, or $400 per week.

1. Job Summary:
The Overnight Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, coordinating, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting in daily program and in the overnight cabin setting. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The incumbent will provide high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the YMCA core values of caring, equity, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

2. Essential Responsibilities:

  • Support the direction, supervision, and organization of campers within cabins, activities, and all camp settings to achieve intended camper outcomes.
  • Apply social-emotional learning and youth development principles through clear communication, relationship building, respect for diversity, and youth empowerment.
  • Ensure campers are appropriately supervised at all times, including during activities and overnight in cabin settings.
  • Follow, enforce, and model all camp safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and supervision protocols.
  • Participate in planning, leading, and supporting camp activities aligned with program goals, camper interests, and individual abilities.
  • Actively engage in assigned program areas, which may include waterfront, nature, challenge course, archery, horses, arts and crafts, and other camp activities.
  • Maintain high standards for camper physical, emotional, and mental health, providing day- and nighttime care and responding appropriately to first aid and emergency situations.
  • Monitor camper behavior, apply approved behavior-management techniques, and enforce safety rules in alignment with camp training and proactive response practices.
  • Ensure campers receive medications as directed by the Health Office and communicate camper needs or concerns with camp leadership as appropriate.
  • Assist with documentation, including program records, incident reports, and verbal or written evaluations as requested.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe program spaces, report maintenance needs promptly, and model appropriate care of equipment and facilities.
  • Serve as a positive role model by upholding YMCA policies, security procedures, general camp practices, and the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Equity.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities and leadership responsibilities as assigned.

3. Relationships:
This position reports to the Program Director who reports to the Senior Program Director or Executive Director. The incumbent may take work direction from a Camp Lead or Camp Manager. The incumbent interacts regularly with camp staff, campers, volunteers, and families. This position involves interaction with individuals and communities of diverse backgrounds.

4. Qualifications:

Required

  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid and CPR/AED certification (provided by the YMCA or another recognized certifying organization).
  • Lifeguard certification may be required for some Counselor positions and can be obtained after hire; accepted certifications include American Red Cross, YMCA, StarGuard, and Boy Scouts of America.
  • Coursework, training, or experience in camp settings, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or a related field.
  • Ability to plan, organize, lead, and implement program activities for all age groups.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

5.Work Conditions

  • Ability to lead and participate in a variety of camp activities, including hiking, canoeing, swimming, team-building initiatives, campfires, physical games, and similar activities.
  • Capability to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds and safely navigate hilly, uneven terrain.
  • Work in outdoor environments that may include dirt, dust, and varying ground conditions.
  • Use and operate camp equipment as needed, including fire protection equipment, washers and dryers, dishwashers, and specialty program tools.
  • Perform physical tasks in support of camp programs, including reaching overhead, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, twisting, and working in narrow or confined spaces at ground, overhead, or underground levels.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and safety hazards.
  • Physical ability to assist and support children when necessary for safety during camp activities (children weighing approximately 30-200 pounds).
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions with regular exposure to sun, heat, and animals such as insects, snakes, horses, and farm animals.
