Overnight Google Mapping Driver information

What is an overnight Google mapping driver?

Overnight Google Mapping Drivers are individuals hired to operate specially-equipped vehicles that capture street-level imagery for Google Maps during nighttime hours. Their main responsibility is to drive through assigned routes while the vehicle’s cameras and sensors collect updated geographic data. Driving overnight can help avoid heavy daytime traffic and capture clearer images in some locations. These drivers play a critical role in keeping Google Maps accurate and up-to-date for users worldwide.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight Google mapping driver?

To excel as an Overnight Google Mapping Driver, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, attention to detail, and familiarity with basic navigation and mapping concepts. Experience with GPS devices, mapping software, and specialized camera or sensor equipment is commonly required. Reliability, strong time management, and the ability to work independently at night are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, safe operation of equipment, and timely completion of mapping assignments in varying nighttime conditions.

What are some unique challenges faced by overnight Google mapping drivers, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Overnight Google Mapping Drivers often work independently during late hours, which can present challenges such as maintaining alertness, navigating less familiar or poorly lit areas, and managing fatigue. Applicants should be prepared for an unconventional schedule and be comfortable driving long hours with minimal supervision. Strong self-motivation, attention to safety protocols, and good time management are crucial for success in this role. Additionally, drivers may need to troubleshoot technical equipment or coordinate remotely with support teams if issues arise during mapping runs.

Job description

Field Data Collection Project

Service Measure (SM) is a field data collection company founded in 2013 in New York. We collect data where automation is not possible. We count features, take pictures, make videos, record speech, and scan areas for every detail you need to make more informed decisions. Our field data collection teams are spread across Europe and North America, ready to accept new challenges.

The goal of the project is to help collect images of streets, main points of interest and public areas in the USA. The project is performed on cars with 360 cameras mounted on top that image the area around the vehicle and store those images on computers inside the vehicle. Later, this data will be used to enhance one the most popular online maps in the world.

The data collectors will be given specific routes around public streets and areas, specifically targeting commercial districts and historical sites. Due to poor weather conditions some areas will be visited multiple times in order to collect the best quality of imaging. The project is expected to last from 3 to 6 months and will cover different data collection areas.

The ideal candidate enjoys driving, knows well the area, traffic trends, is highly responsible and reliable. The schedule expected on the project is Monday-Friday, 8 hours/day 40 hours per week. Due to weather downtime, work on weekends is possible.

Requirements
  • Must have a valid Driver License;
  • Good driving skills and clean driving record;
  • General car knowledge would be a plus;
  • Enjoys driving, within standard business hours;
  • Available for a minimum of 3 months;

  • High level of responsibility;
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented;
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check (criminal and driving record).
