Job description

Field Service Technician – Gearbox Services
Position Summary
Horsburgh amp; Scott, a recognized leader in engineered gear drives, gearbox manufacturing, and repair services for over 140 years, is seeking a skilled and customer-focused Field Service Technician to support installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities at customer locations.
This position serves as the face of Horsburgh amp; Scott in the field and is responsible for delivering exceptional technical service while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate possesses strong mechanical aptitude, experience working with industrial rotating equipment, and the ability to work independently in demanding industrial environments.
This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position due to the nature of the work performed and the environment in which services are provided.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Field Service Operations
  • Travel to customer facilities to perform installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and commissioning of industrial gearboxes, gear drives, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Perform gearbox inspections, disassembly, assembly oversight, alignment verification, and operational assessments.
  • Diagnose mechanical equipment failures and determine corrective actions.
  • Assist with root cause analysis investigations and provide recommendations for equipment reliability improvements.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, repair procedures, assembly instructions, and equipment specifications.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments and diagnostic equipment to evaluate equipment condition and performance.
  • Conduct vibration, lubrication, alignment, and operational checks as required.
  • Coordinate service activities with customer personnel and internal support teams.
Customer Service
  • Maintain professional relationships with customers while representing Horsburgh amp; Scott.
  • Communicate findings, recommendations, and repair status updates clearly and professionally.
  • Respond to customer questions and technical concerns.
  • Support emergency service calls and customer outage situations when required.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Complete field service reports, inspection reports, expense reports, timesheets, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Document equipment conditions, repair recommendations, and completed work activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of service work performed.
Safety and Compliance
  • Comply with all Horsburgh amp; Scott safety policies and customer site safety requirements.
  • Participate in customer safety orientations and comply with all applicable PPE requirements.
  • Utilize lockout/tagout procedures and other safe work practices.
  • Maintain certifications and training required for customer site access.
  • Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support shop repair activities when not assigned to field service work.
  • Assist with equipment testing and customer acceptance activities.
  • Participate in technical training and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Technical school, trade school, military technical training, or equivalent mechanical training preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of industrial mechanical maintenance, field service, gearbox repair, rotating equipment, power transmission, or related experience required.
  • Experience with industrial gear drives, gearboxes, bearings, couplings, lubrication systems, and rotating equipment strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, mining, steel, power generation, aggregate, cement, marine, or heavy industrial environments preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, schematics, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of precision measurement tools and equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, and lifting equipment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic reporting systems preferred.
Certifications
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
  • Ability to obtain customer-required certifications and site qualifications.
  • MSHA, OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, and confined space certifications are beneficial but not required.
Travel Requirements
  • Ability to travel 50% to 75% of the time, including overnight travel.
  • Ability to travel on short notice to support customer emergency service requirements.
  • Ability to work variable schedule including weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as business needs require.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Lift and carry tools, equipment, and components weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with assistance when necessary.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods, frequently 6 to 12 hours per day.
  • Climb ladders, platforms, industrial structures, and multiple flights of stairs.
  • Work at elevated heights utilizing fall protection systems when required.
  • Push, pull, position, and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 80 pounds with appropriate assistance or mechanical devices.
  • Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and reach while performing maintenance and repair activities.
  • Use hands and fingers to manipulate tools, controls, instruments, and small mechanical components.
  • Maintain visual acuity sufficient to read gauges, drawings, technical documents, and diagnostic displays.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, harnesses, and protective footwear.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles and travel to customer sites during daytime and nighttime hours.
