What does an overnight field research biologist do?

An Overnight Field Research Biologist conducts scientific studies and data collection in outdoor environments, often working overnight hours to observe nocturnal animals or ecological processes that occur after dark. Their responsibilities may include setting up equipment, monitoring wildlife activity, collecting samples, and recording observations during nighttime hours. This role often involves working in remote locations, sometimes under challenging weather conditions, to gather accurate data crucial for ecological research and conservation efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight field research biologist?

To thrive as an Overnight Field Research Biologist, you need a solid background in biology, ecology, or a related field, often with a relevant degree and experience in fieldwork. Familiarity with GPS devices, data collection software, and possibly certifications for handling wildlife or specific research techniques are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in challenging environments are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, adaptability to unpredictable field conditions, and effective contributions to research objectives during overnight shifts.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight field research biologists, and how can applicants best prepare for them?

Overnight Field Research Biologists often face challenges such as adapting to irregular sleep schedules, working in remote or rugged environments, and handling unpredictable weather conditions. Applicants should be prepared for physical demands, demonstrate flexibility, and possess strong problem-solving skills. Experience with data collection at night, familiarity with relevant equipment, and the ability to work independently or in small teams are valuable assets. Building resilience and practicing good communication will help ensure success and safety during overnight fieldwork.

What is the difference between Overnight Field Research Biologist vs Wildlife Technician?

AspectOvernight Field Research BiologistWildlife Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in biology, ecology, or related field; fieldwork experienceAssociate's or bachelor's in wildlife management, biology, or related field; field experience often preferred
Work EnvironmentField-based, often overnight or extended hours in natural habitatsFieldwork in wildlife areas, often during daytime, with some overnight shifts
Industry UsageResearch institutions, environmental agencies, conservation projectsWildlife management agencies, conservation organizations, research projects

While both roles involve fieldwork in natural settings, the Overnight Field Research Biologist typically conducts detailed ecological studies overnight, requiring advanced education and research skills. The Wildlife Technician often supports field projects during daytime hours, focusing on data collection and habitat management. Both roles are vital in conservation efforts but differ mainly in scope, credentials, and work hours.

This position will contribute to multidisciplinary research focused on understanding marine soundscapes, the effects of noise on marine life, and the sensory capabilities of marine organisms.

The successful candidate will work across multiple projects and research teams and should be comfortable operating in a dynamic environment that includes laboratory research, field operations, data analysis, and scientific outreach. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a broad portfolio of research involving marine bioacoustics, sensory biology, acoustic ecology, field science, data science, and emerging analytical technologies while working alongside interdisciplinary research teams at WHOI.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Support acoustic studies investigating the effects of noise on marine life.

  • Assist with coral reef soundscape studies and related acoustic data analyses.

  • Support collection, organization, management, and quality control of research data.

  • Conduct acoustic analyses, including acoustic calibration and soundscape analysis.

  • Support machine learning analyses, particularly those involving acoustic and soundscape datasets.

  • Assist with field research activities, including SCUBA diving, small boat operations, equipment deployment, and other field logistics.

  • Support neurophysiological and electrophysiological experiments designed to measure the hearing abilities of marine fauna.

  • Assist with animal handling, husbandry, and zoological research activities as needed.

  • Contribute to the development, testing, and use of research tools and instrumentation.

  • Support data management and analysis involving large and complex datasets.

  • Assist with scientific outreach and related project activities.

  • Work collaboratively with multiple research teams while also independently managing assigned responsibilities.
