Job description


Title: Factory Applications and Installation Engineer

Reports to: Factory Applications Leader

Location: DMG MORI Manufacturing USA – 3601 Faraday Avenue, Davis, CA 95618

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm

Classification: Non-Exempt

Travel: Up to 75%

This position has access to equipment and/or technology that is subject to U.S. export control restrictions. Hiring by DMG MORI must be made in compliance with applicable regulations.

The Factory Applications and Installation Engineer will provide best-in-class technical support and field installation services for DMG MORI machine tools, including horizontal milling machines, pallet automation systems, and peripherals. This role supports customers, sales teams, and trade show activities by delivering application engineering expertise—such as time studies, programming, process definition, machine demonstrations, and testing—while also providing machine and automation installation, commissioning, and training at customer sites.

Essential Job Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.   • Perform application engineering work independently and set priorities with knowledge of company goals.
  • Install & ship ready CNC machines including rigging, assembly and quality testing.
  • Design and fabricate fixtures/ work holding for demo’s, test cuts, and turnkeys.
  • Define and troubleshoot complex manufacturing and machining processes.
  • Conduct time estimates for customer parts with 10% tolerance.
  • Use CAPPS conversational programming, industry standard CAM systems, and direct G-Code/ Macro programming to generate CNC programs for parts processing.
  • Set up CNC machines with program, tooling, workpiece, and fixtures including 5-axis and mill-turn.
  • Inspection of finished parts for quality and accuracy using hand tools and a CMM.
  • Provide assistance and training to DMG MORI Service Engineers on the installation of CNC machines and pallet/automation systems including training on systems after installation.
  • Establish and build exemplary communication and customer service relationships with customers.
  • Manage difficult customer situations in a positive manner, respond promptly to customer needs and solicit customer feedback to improve service.
  • Creating and updating documentation of technical information for use in engineering reports and technical documentation and proposals for process and turnkey applications
  • Complete and submit all company required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Adopt a start-to-finish approach to tasks and completely follow up on them.
  • Prepare tools, procedures, technical documentation, and customer details prior to starting projects.
  • Overnight and extended absence from base location as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or associate degree in technical related field of study preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting preferably of CNC machine tools.
  • 3-7 years related operation experience on CNC machine tools
  • Experience working with DMG MORI SEIKI machines with Fanuc and Mitsubishi controls are a PLUS.
  • Organize work plans to achieve efficient and safe work practices. Maintain customer impression of top tier service
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with exceptional customer service orientation.
  • Must be able to interact and effectively communicate in person and over the phone with people at all levels of an organization.
  • Proven ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and sequence (PLC) ladder diagrams.
  • Basic computer literacy and working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must be adaptable to changes in the work environment; manage competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Willing to travel up to 75% of the time depending on demand; drive or fly depending on distance. Employee is expected to work at the USA factory when not visiting customers.

Work Environment:

Exposure to manufacturing/machining environments which may present possible hazards such as noise, electricity, chemicals, heavy equipment, and other automated and manual machinery. General office environment experienced at DMG MORI office.

Physical Demands:

Frequent: Travel, operating a vehicle, sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, and reaching. Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects. Repetitive foot, leg, hand, arm, shoulder, and torso movements.

Periodic: Operating power equipment, sitting at desk, utilizing computers and phones.

Occasional: Lifting or moving up to 50lbs.
