Overnight Engineer information

What is an overnight engineer?

Overnight engineers are professionals who work engineering shifts during the nighttime hours, typically to ensure the continuous operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment, systems, or facilities. Their responsibilities may include monitoring critical systems, performing repairs, and responding to emergencies that occur outside of regular business hours. Overnight engineers are commonly employed in industries that require 24/7 operation, such as hotels, hospitals, manufacturing plants, and data centers. This role is crucial for minimizing downtime and ensuring safety and productivity during off-hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and facility maintenance, typically with technical training or certification in building systems. Familiarity with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as proficiency in using building management systems (BMS) and maintenance software, is often required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure uninterrupted facility operations, quick response to emergencies, and high standards of safety and comfort when resources may be limited overnight.

What are some unique challenges faced by overnight engineers and how can they be managed?

Overnight Engineers often encounter challenges such as working with limited on-site staff, handling urgent technical issues independently, and maintaining alertness during non-traditional hours. Effective communication with daytime teams and strong time-management skills are essential to ensure smooth handovers and ongoing project progress. Many organizations provide support through staggered shifts or on-call backup, but adaptability and self-direction are key to thriving in this role.

Overnight Engineers focus on technical engineering tasks, system troubleshooting, and complex repairs during overnight shifts, often requiring specialized engineering credentials. Maintenance Technicians perform routine repairs and preventive maintenance, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles operate in industrial or manufacturing environments, but Overnight Engineers usually handle more complex engineering issues, while Maintenance Technicians focus on general upkeep and repairs.

Do overnight engineers work overnight?

Yes, overnight engineers typically work during nighttime hours, often from late evening to early morning, to perform maintenance, monitoring, or system updates. This schedule allows for minimal disruption to daily operations and may require working in shifts or overnight shifts. The role often involves technical skills and the ability to work independently during off-hours.

Location: Tulsa, OK
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Civil Engineer to join our Civil Team Leadership Group. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead site development projects through strong technical expertise and to contribute to the continuous improvement of our civil engineering processes. Responsibilities will include refining design workflows, developing QA/QC checklists, and enhancing production drawing and modeling templates, particularly within Civil 3D.

Our projects span local, regional, and national scopes across all 48 contiguous states. We serve a diverse client base, including Federal Government, Municipalities, Retail, Commercial, Healthcare, and Industrial sectors. This role offers the opportunity to lead large, multi-discipline, multi-million-dollar projects as the Civil Discipline Lead, as well as oversee multiple smaller projects while mentoring civil designers and technicians.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and complete technical aspects of civil engineering site development projects.

  • Define project scopes, conduct feasibility studies, and develop design proposals and narratives.

  • Produce formal engineering reports, review specifications, perform design calculations, and conduct system modeling.

  • Review geotechnical reports and site surveys, and participate in client and city development meetings.

  • Prepare site construction observation reports, document formal meetings, and respond to construction and bid RFIs.

  • Collaborate closely with both in-house and remote multidisciplinary teams to deliver well-coordinated projects on time and within budget.

  • Perform site visits to document existing conditions (local, regional, and national travel as required).

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong familiarity with current design trends, local codes, and Federal Facility Criteria (Whole Building Design Guide).

  • Knowledge of industry standards for civil design and illustration.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to prepare project proposals and accurately estimate project fees.

  • Willingness to travel overnight by car and air as needed.

  • Strong client communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
