Overnight Dog Boarding information

What are the main responsibilities and challenges of working in overnight dog boarding?

In overnight dog boarding, your primary responsibilities include feeding, exercising, and monitoring the well-being of dogs throughout the night. You are often tasked with maintaining a clean and safe environment, administering medications if needed, and ensuring dogs feel comfortable away from their owners. A common challenge in this role is managing dogs with separation anxiety or those who are unaccustomed to new environments, which requires patience and strong communication skills. Overnight shifts can also be physically demanding, so being prepared for late hours and occasional emergencies is important for success.

What is overnight dog boarding?

Overnight dog boarding is a pet care service where dogs stay at a facility, a pet sitter's home, or occasionally in the owner's home while their owners are away, typically overnight or for several days. The service includes feeding, exercise, socialization, and monitoring of the dog's health and well-being. Trained staff or experienced sitters ensure that dogs are safe, comfortable, and have their needs met throughout their stay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight dog boarding attendant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Dog Boarding Attendant, you need knowledge of animal care, basic pet first aid, and experience handling dogs of various sizes and temperaments. Familiarity with kennel management software, cleaning protocols, and safety equipment is often required. Patience, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you provide excellent care and reassure pet owners. These abilities are essential to ensure the well-being of the animals, maintain a safe environment, and build trust with clients.

What is the difference between Overnight Dog Boarding vs Pet Sitting?

AspectOvernight Dog BoardingPet Sitting
CredentialsBasic pet care knowledge, sometimes certificationsSame as overnight dog boarding, often with additional certifications
Work EnvironmentBoarding facility or kennel, overnight stayOwner's home or client's location, flexible hours
Employer & IndustryPet care facilities, kennels, pet boarding servicesIndependent pet sitters, pet care agencies

Overnight Dog Boarding involves caring for dogs at a boarding facility or kennel overnight, providing a safe environment away from the owner's home. Pet Sitting typically involves caring for pets at the owner's home, offering more personalized attention. Both roles require basic pet care knowledge, but the setting and scope differ. Understanding these differences helps pet owners choose the right service for their pets' needs.

Morning Boarding Specialist and Dog Wrangler

Scampers LLC

Kirkland, WA โ€ข On-site

$17 - $19/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement

Re-posted 25 days ago

Job description

Scampers Daycamp for Dogs on NE 124th Street in the Totem Lake area of Kirkland is looking for a Full Time Rock Solid Dog Wrangler for morning shifts - Sunday mornings as Boarding Specialist, and Monday through Thursday mornings as a Wrangler.
If you're available right away, you can start right away.

Sunday mornings, you'll be the leader of the team tending to our overnight visitors, providing breakfasts and any medications as described by the pooches' owners, and reporting to owners as to their pooches' comfort, especially as regards potty time, mealtime, and medications.

Monday through Thursday, you will be a member of a team monitoring a large group of dogs and maintaining a safe and clean play environment.
If you love dogs and think you can handle working with a great number of them, possess lots of positive energy, and can keep up in a fast-paced environment, we want you on our team.
This opportunity would work best for someone with Kennel Tech experience, as well for someone with Vet Assistant or Vet Tech experience.
We only ask that you treat the dogs with love and kindness, treat our customers with consideration and respect, and that you're willing to work hard as a member of a tight-knit team and that you have a rock-solid work ethic.
Here's what we mean when we ask for someone who has a rock-solid work ethic:
- If you're on the schedule, it's because you are a crucial member of a carefully assembled team working to keep everyone (canines and humans) safe.
- Reliability is an absolute must - whether you commute by bus, car, or Uber doesn't matter, but we need you to get to your shift - every time, on time!
- Dog wrangling is a lot of fun, but it is also an important and occasionally a very physically demanding job. You will be on your feet all day. There are moments of strenuous work between long periods of quiet, but you must be able to stay focused on the dogs, even when they appear to be calm and settled. You always need to be prepared to run, but also have fun.
If this sounds like a career you'd like to pursue, please send us your resume along with a cover letter describing why you'd be a good fit for Scampers.
