Overnight Defense Contractor Software Engineer information

What is an overnight defense contractor software engineer?

Overnight Defense Contractor Software Engineers are professionals who develop, maintain, and troubleshoot software systems used in defense applications, often working during overnight shifts to support 24/7 operations. They may work for companies contracted by government or military agencies, ensuring that critical defense systems are secure, functional, and up to date. These engineers typically work on projects involving cybersecurity, embedded systems, simulation, or mission-critical software. Their role can also involve responding to real-time incidents or updates that need immediate attention outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight defense contractor software engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Defense Contractor Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, proficiency in programming languages such as C++ or Java, and typically a security clearance due to sensitive project work. Familiarity with secure software development practices, version control systems (like Git), and defense-specific tools such as MATLAB or simulation platforms is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with teams and ensuring quality under tight deadlines. These technical and soft skills are crucial for delivering reliable, secure software solutions that meet stringent defense industry standards and operate effectively in mission-critical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight defense contractor software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Defense Contractor Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing communication across different time zones, ensuring security compliance during off-peak hours, and maintaining high alertness while working unconventional shifts. To address these, it's important to establish clear handover protocols with daytime teams, stay updated on security best practices, and implement personal routines to manage sleep and alertness. Building strong remote communication skills and leveraging collaboration tools can also help ensure project continuity and team cohesion.

About Applied Intuition

Applied Intuition, Inc. is powering the future of physical AI. Founded in 2017 and now valued at $15 billion, the Silicon Valley company is creating the digital infrastructure needed to bring intelligence to every moving machine on the planet. Applied Intuition services the automotive, defense, trucking, construction, mining and agriculture industries in three core areas: tools and infrastructure, operating systems, and autonomy. Eighteen of the top 20 global automakers, as well as the United States military and its allies, trust the companyโ€™s solutions to deliver physical intelligence. Applied Intuition is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, with offices in Washington, D.C.; San Diego; Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; Ann Arbor, Michigan; London; Stuttgart; Munich; Stockholm; Bangalore; Seoul; and Tokyo. Learn more at applied.co.

We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that employees primarily work from their Applied Intuition office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments.

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and improvement of integrated live, virtual, and constructive simulation solutions for experimentation, testing, and training of multi-agent autonomy software. You will design and document LVC architectures, create simulation scenarios, write interface code, conduct code reviews, and solve integration roadblocks. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will translate requirements into technical solutions while mentoring junior engineers. The role also involves continuous innovation, testing, debugging, documentation, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines and security compliance.

At Applied Intuition, you will:
  • Support the experimentation, testing, and training of Tactical AI agents through the development of live, virtual, and constructive simulation solutions, balancing fidelity, scale, time, and cost

  • Research and learn new modeling, simulation, and communication tools, including internal and customer-owned prototype software under active development

  • Work with 3rd party vendors to incorporate proprietary models while respecting intellectual property boundaries

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership, fostering a culture of learning and using good coding practices, design patterns, and industry standards

  • Software Development: Write, modify, test, and debug efficient code (C++ 2017+, Python 3.10+, and other languages as needed) for adapters, translators, and more complex interfaces

  • System Architecture: Design robust LVC integrations that meets performance, scalability, and security requirements

We're looking for someone who has:
  • Masterโ€™s degree or equivalent experience in modeling & simulation, computer science, or software engineering

  • Experience using simulation interoperability standards such as DIS, HLA, and DSEEP, as well as custom methods and technologies, to build LVC federations

  • Knowledge of communication protocols and serialization mechanisms such as DDS, ZeroMQ, Kafka, Redis, and protobuf

  • Experience configuring, integrating, extending, and using defense M&S tools such as AFSIM, NGTS, and flight simulators

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing performant modern C++ (2017+)

  • Experience developing in Docker and containerized development environments, working in Linux-based operating systems (e.g., RHEL, Ubuntu), and using development tools such as git, Visual Studio Code, GitLab, SonarQube, and Artifactory or Azure Container registry

Travel Requirements:
  • Willing to travel for company business between our offices, as well as to customer sites (~25%)

Security Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Must hold or be eligible for a U.S. Secret security clearance

For more information about U.S. security clearances: click here.

Nice to have:
  • PhD degree in related engineering field

  • 7+ years of experience developing software in multiple programming languages

  • Experience working with government interoperability architectures such as OMS/UCI

  • Experience working with model-based systems engineering artifacts, hardware-in-the-loop testing environments, and multi-level security environments

  • Experience with high performance computing (HPC) environments

  • Experience with flight test readiness and airworthiness processes

Compensation at Applied Intuition for eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Note that benefits are subject to change and may vary based on jurisdiction of employment.

Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. The actual base salary offered to a successful candidate will additionally be influenced by a variety of factors including experience, credentials & certifications, educational attainment, skill level requirements, interview performance, and the level and scope of the position.

Donโ€™t meet every single requirement? If youโ€™re excited about this role but your past experience doesnโ€™t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
