Job description

Description
Your role at GEI.
GEI's Oakland, California office is seeking a Staff Civil Engineer to join our growing water resources engineering practice. This is an opportunity to build strong technical and practical engineering skills while working on complex water infrastructure projects throughout Northern California and across the United States.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists on dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, pipelines and open-channel conveyance systems, water storage and recharge facilities, and other heavy civil infrastructure. You'll contribute to projects from planning and design through construction while developing your engineering judgment, technical capabilities, field experience, and understanding of project delivery.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Perform civil engineering calculations, analyses, data evaluation and interpretation, modeling, and design tasks under the direction of experienced engineers.
  • Support the planning and design of dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, pipelines, open-channel conveyance systems, water storage and recharge facilities, and other heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and design documents using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, portions of engineering reports, design calculations, construction drawings, technical specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and other project documentation for review by senior technical staff.
  • Organize assigned tasks and subtasks, understand project objectives, manage individual time and priorities, and complete work consistent with established scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Apply GEI's QA/QC procedures to assigned work and prepare accurate, high-quality calculations, drawings, data, and written deliverables for Task Manager and Project Manager review.
  • Develop practical engineering solutions for routine project issues, provide technical recommendations to Task Managers, Project Managers, and senior technical staff, and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • Communicate regularly with Task Managers and Project Managers regarding work progress, technical questions, workload, schedule, and budget considerations.
  • Support construction-phase engineering and field activities, including field observations, documentation, construction coordination, review of project information, and other engineering support as assigned.
  • Perform field work in accordance with established project procedures and GEI safety requirements and develop increasingly strong field observation, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinate with engineers, scientists, technicians, CAD designers, subcontractors, and other project team members as required to complete assigned work.
  • Assist with the preparation of proposals, including technical information, scopes of work, task budgets, schedules, and other proposal materials.
  • Participate in client and project meetings with senior staff to gain experience communicating technical information and understanding client needs.
  • As experience develops, provide guidance and technical support to less-experienced staff on familiar tasks and begin to coordinate or lead small field teams for defined task assignments under the direction of senior staff.
  • Travel to project sites and other GEI offices as required, including occasional overnight travel and temporary out-of-area assignments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or ability to obtain EIT certification within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • 0 - 4 years of relevant civil engineering experience; demonstrated capability and level of responsibility will be considered in addition to years of experience.
  • Developing knowledge of civil engineering principles, analysis and design methods, applicable codes, standards, and industry practices.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, organize and interpret technical data, and prepare clear and accurate engineering documentation.
  • Ability to execute assigned technical tasks with increasing independence while recognizing when technical guidance or review is needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize individual assignments, manage time and priorities, and communicate work status to Task Managers and Project Managers.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality calculations, drawings, and written work consistent with established QA/QC procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative project team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D, or demonstrated ability to develop proficiency in these applications.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel as project needs require.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or academic background related to water resources engineering, hydraulic structures, civil infrastructure, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or construction.
  • Experience with dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, pipelines, open-channel conveyance systems, water storage or recharge facilities, or similar infrastructure.
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, drawings, technical memoranda, reports, specifications, or cost estimates.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Field or construction experience, including construction observation, inspection, surveying, or engineering field documentation.
  • Familiarity with reinforced-concrete structures or other heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Interest in pursuing professional engineering licensure in California.
  • M.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
