Job Title: Head Gravity Bike Coach/Technician

Department: Athletics

Reports to: Primary -   Dean of Athletics

FLSA Status:  Salary - Exempt

Academy Status: Full Time/10 month plus 3 summer camps

Salary Range: $35,000 - $50,000 per year commensurate with experience

Job Summary Primary 

The Head Gravity Coach/Technician is responsible for overseeing the Competition Gravity program, including Gravity practice, training, competition, and student-athlete recruitment. The position will report directly to the Dean of Athletics.  The Head Gravity Coach/Technician works in conjunction with the Assistant Gravity Coach to plan all on-course and off-the-bike sessions. The Head Gravity Coach/Technician is also responsible for competition planning and home competition planning and execution.   The position will also be responsible for coordinating with the Varsity Mountain Biking Director for overall use of trails, vehicles, and equipment.

The Head Gravity Coach/Technician will develop year-round training and competition schedules to deliver a top-notch training and development program emphasizing technical skill development, riding, competition, and execution, including transportation, lodging, bike tuning, and athlete supervision.

Head Gravity Coach/Technician will be responsible for overall maintenance and repairs of the Gravity program athletes and will support the varsity Mountain Bike program. This will include maintaining tools and inventory.

The Head Gravity Coach/Technician will play a key role in developing and implementing strategies to attract and retain athletes and coaches and will work in partnership with the Dean of Athletics and the Dean of Admissions on recruitment strategies.  Gravity Camps and Competitions should be viewed as opportunities to recruit future Gould students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Coach

• Coaches Gravity athletes.
• Prepares training venue and equipment maintenance.
• Manages athlete transportation for daily training and events.
• Assists athletes with gear selection and maintenance.
• Coach three Gould summer bike camps.
• Communicates with athletes, parents, and faculty.
• Participates in professional development clinics/training.
• Additional winter coaching duties

Technician

• Examines bicycles and identifies parts that may need repair, replacement, or modification.
• Installs, repairs, and replaces various equipment and accessories.
• Adjusts components according to rider specifications.
• Aligns the wheels of bicycles.
• Repairs, modifies, or replaces faulty parts.
• Builds or assembles new bicycles.

Travel Protocol / Camps / Overnight Trips

• 24 hr supervisory duties to include downtime, warm-up and cool-down training, supervised study hall, equipment maintenance, and nutritional health and sleep habits.
• Driving vans pulling trailers

Manage

• Submits daily attendance on BlackBaud. 
• Manage athlete equipment.
• Plan and execute away competitions, including travel, lodging, and supervision.
• Submit accurate trip ITs and trip recons in a timely fashion.
• Plan athlete travel for in-season competition and training opportunities.
• Manage and maintain program equipment (tools, trailers, video, etc).
• Write and make notes of ongoing athlete comments, term-ending athlete comments, and ongoing parent communications in the school’s Information System, which is currently Blackbaud. 

Recruit

• Development of the recruiting process for Gravity riders and  families to include:
  • Visit structure
  • Identification of families
  • Manage inquiries

Professionalism

• Attendance and participation in team and organization meetings.
• Prompt and frequent communication with athletes, parents, and faculty.
• Meets general daily professional standards regarding attendance, timeliness, and deadlines.
• Adheres to policies in the Employee Handbook and Community Guide.

Community Life

Faculty help to supervise students on school nights and weekends.  This position is exempt from community duties during the fall and spring competitive racing season

• Help supervise students one night a week in an academic or residential space
• Support Four Point Program
• Participate in a weekend duty team (see above)
• Engage in community activities
• Communicate and seek to reduce scheduling conflicts

Other Duties

An additional Coaching assignment will be given in the winter. This job description does not state or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee.  They will be required to follow any additional instructions and perform any additional duties requested by their supervisor(s) and/or the Head of School.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required, undergraduate degree or above preferred
• Athletic competition or coaching experience preferred
• Ability to fix and maintain bike components, including tuning suspension systems
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and cold temps
• CPR, First Aid, and Safe Sport Certified (or willingness to be trained)
• Basic software literacy in Google Suite
• Valid passport and US driver’s license 
• Pass a criminal and sexual offender background and driving records check
• Obtain a CHRC from the Maine Department of Education

Physical Work Environment Gravity

• Ability to navigate and coach on difficult terrain
• Ability to ride a mountain bike on difficult terrain and in inclement weather conditions
• Occasional prolonged and irregular hours
• Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
• Occasional lifting up to 10-50 pounds of supplies
• Occasionally, this position will involve kneeling, squatting, climbing, and driving a motor vehicle
• Must be able to travel to all campus locations and to appropriate training and meetings
