Overnight Backup Engineer information

What does an overnight backup engineer do?

An Overnight Backup Engineer is responsible for managing and monitoring data backup processes during nighttime hours to ensure critical systems and information are safely stored. Their duties include performing scheduled backups, verifying data integrity, troubleshooting failed jobs, and restoring data as needed. Working overnight helps minimize business disruption and allows for maintenance tasks that can't be performed during peak hours. They also document backup activities and coordinate with IT teams to resolve issues quickly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight backup engineer?

To excel as an Overnight Backup Engineer, you need strong knowledge of backup and recovery procedures, data storage systems, and relevant IT certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate. Familiarity with backup software like Veeam, Commvault, or Veritas NetBackup, as well as ticketing systems and scripting languages, is often required. Outstanding problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable data protection, swift issue resolution, and minimal disruption to business operations during nighttime hours.

What are some common challenges faced by an overnight backup engineer and how can they be managed?

Overnight Backup Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting failed backups, managing unexpected system alerts, and ensuring data integrity during off-peak hours when fewer team members are available. Effective communication with on-call support staff and maintaining detailed documentation of issues are key to addressing these challenges. Additionally, strong time management and familiarity with backup software and scripts help ensure smooth operations and minimize disruptions.

Job description

Description
The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging Division (MSK) at the University of Virginia, seeks candidates to fill multiple Clinical Instructor positions to begin July 1, 2026. The University of Virginia MSK Division is participating in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) Fellowship Match process, sponsored by the Society of Skeletal Imaging. Qualified candidates will be members of the NRMP, http://www.nrmp.org/.
This one-year post-graduate training fellowship program focuses on all aspects of MSK imaging. The fellowship includes significant experience with a wide variety of image-guided procedures, including pain management procedures and spine injections, in addition to cross-sectional and plain radiographic diagnostic work. It is expected that each fellow complete one academic project (such as a paper for publication, QI project, or education exhibit) during the year.
In addition to the above purely clinical fellowship positions, one position will be a hybrid of MSK/Informatics. The hybrid fellow will asymmetrically divide time between clinical MSK work (~80%) and clinical informatics experience/research (~20%). The ideal candidate for this position is at least entertaining the idea of an academic career (though not required) and has aptitude (though not necessarily experience) in engineering or information technology/systems.
Clinical responsibilities for both of the above types of positions include supervised and graduated levels of unsupervised clinical work. Outpatient rotations will be done at the new Ivy Mountain Musculoskeletal Center. The Department provides final reads to our ED patients on a 24-7 basis with overnight coverage being provided by our fellows who elect to participate in the program. Overnight work can be performed from home, and includes subspecialty attending back-up as needed. This optional program bolsters income in a comfortable environment, while promoting the maintenance and further development of general radiology skills in preparation for boards and practice.
For more information on this program, please visit: Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship - Radiology and Medical Imaging - UVA School of Medicine (virginia.edu)
University of Virginia (UVA) Health is located in Charlottesville Virginia, a beautiful and highly desirable location of the Mid-Atlantic region, two hours' drive from Washington, D.C., with the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. It is consistently rated as one of the best US cities to live in, based on cost of living, climate, and quality of life. Affiliation with the University of Virginia provides the opportunity for constant exposure to athletic, cultural, and social events. UVA Health ranks in the top 100 hospitals in the country according to US News and World Report, and it is recognized as one of the "best benchmark hospitals."
Qualifications
Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and successfully completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at an ACGME accredited institution or successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
Application Instructions
As per the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD), we cannot accept applications or offer an opportunity to interview with our program until November 1, 2024.
Exceptions to the SCARD embargo include:
• Applicants whose spouse/domestic partner is also applying for a medical fellowship in the same year
• Internal candidates
• Military candidates
• International candidates - international candidates are defined as applicants from programs that are neither ACGME or RCPS programs (i.e. Canadian applicants are NOT excluded from the embargo.)
The position will remain open until filled.
To apply for this position, please go to http://apply.interfolio.com/152894
For full consideration, applications must include a curriculum vitae, cover letter/personal statement, USMLE transcript that includes Step 1, 2, and 3 scores (or equivalent) transcript, and ECFMG (if applicable). Three current letters of recommendation are to be sent directly to the program coordinator. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.
For questions about the position, please contact Stephanie Kidd, Fellowship Program Administrator, via email at JXB4AB@uvahealth.org
Please keep up to date with MSK Radiology Fellowship Match information on https://skeletalrad.org/ and any updates on our website regarding timelines for interviews and acceptance.
