Over The Road Class B drivers generally operate on regional or multistate routes, often covering several hundred miles per trip, with schedules that may include overnight or multi-day hauls. Most schedules are planned in advance, but flexibility is important, as delivery times and travel durations can change based on weather, traffic, or customer requirements. Drivers may work independently much of the time but regularly communicate with dispatchers and logistics teams to arrange pickups and deliveries. These roles require a balance of autonomy and collaboration to ensure timely service and customer satisfaction. If you enjoy travel and independence, this position offers a dynamic work environment with the chance to experience different regions.
To thrive as an Over The Road (OTR) Class B driver, you need a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and a strong understanding of traffic laws and safety regulations. Experience with electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS navigation, and proper cargo securing systems is typically required. Dependability, strong communication, and time management skills are valued soft skills for coordinating deliveries and handling long-distance routes. These qualifications ensure safe, timely, and efficient transport of goods over regional or long-haul routes.
