What is an outsourced accountant?

An outsourced accountant is a financial professional or firm hired externally to handle some or all of a company's accounting tasks, rather than employing an in-house accountant. These services often include bookkeeping, payroll processing, tax preparation, financial reporting, and advisory services. Outsourcing accounting functions can help businesses save on costs, access specialized expertise, and focus more on core business activities. This approach is popular among small and medium-sized businesses seeking flexibility and scalability in their financial operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outsourced accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outsourced Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and tax regulations, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications such as CPA or ACCA. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or SAP, as well as proficiency in spreadsheet tools, is essential for managing client accounts efficiently. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and adaptability to diverse industries and client needs make someone stand out in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial management, foster client trust, and enable effective service delivery in a dynamic outsourcing environment.

How does an outsourced accountant typically collaborate with client teams and internal stakeholders?

As an outsourced accountant, you will frequently communicate with client representatives, such as finance managers or business owners, to gather financial data and clarify requirements. Collaboration often occurs virtually, using cloud-based accounting platforms and communication tools to share documents and updates efficiently. You'll also work closely with your own firm’s team, including audit or tax specialists, to ensure consistency and accuracy across client accounts. Building strong client relationships and proactively addressing questions are key to delivering value and maintaining client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Outsourced Accountant vs Bookkeeper?

Work EnvironmentRemote or outsourced firms, client officesOffice or remote, often in small business settings
ResponsibilitiesFinancial analysis, tax planning, reportingData entry, transaction recording, bank reconciliations
Industry UsageAccounting firms, corporations, small businessesSmall businesses, startups, freelance

While both roles handle financial data, an outsourced accountant provides comprehensive financial analysis and strategic advice, whereas a bookkeeper focuses on recording daily transactions. The outsourced accountant typically has advanced credentials and handles higher-level financial tasks, making them suitable for complex financial needs. Conversely, a bookkeeper manages routine record-keeping, essential for accurate financial statements. Understanding these differences helps businesses choose the right financial support for their needs.

As one of the top accounting firms in the country, our foundation is “people first.” In the words of James Kaufman, “we prioritize our people, their development, and their well-being. Our values are translated into action every day.”

Kaufman Rossin is a privately owned, independent public accounting firm, which means we are not beholden to outside investors or private equity influence. This independence allows us to prioritize long‑term client relationships, maintain objectivity in our advisory approach, and make strategic decisions that benefit our people and clients, not external stakeholders. Our structure fosters agility, entrepreneurial thinking, and a collaborative culture where leadership is accessible, and innovation is encouraged.

Celebrated as the Best Place to Work in South Florida over a dozen times, Kaufman Rossin has grown to over 700 employees, with offices spanning the tri‑county area, including sister entities Kaufman Rossin Wealth and Kaufman Rossin Alternative Investment Services.

Think you have what it takes? How You’ll Contribute:

Kaufman Rossin is seeking a Manager / Senior Manager to join our growing Outsourced Accounting Services (OAS) practice. This is a high‑impact role for an experienced accounting professional who is passionate about leveraging cutting‑edge technology to deliver controller and CFO‑level services to a diverse client portfolio. Our CAS team is at the forefront of technology‑driven accounting, and the right candidate will have the opportunity to grow with a team that is shaping the future of outsourced accounting.

  • Oversee multiple client engagements simultaneously and manage deadlines, workflow, and team execution across accounts.
  • Solve higher‑risk technical accounting and operational issues and review complex judgments before final escalation.
  • Optimize workflows across engagements and identify opportunities for efficiency, standardization, and improved delivery consistency.
  • Balance client, team, and firm needs when making decisions in ambiguous or fast‑moving situations.
  • Design and refine policies, procedures, and service delivery processes that strengthen execution across the portfolio.
  • Lead process improvement efforts related to close, reporting, workflow coordination, and team handoffs.
  • Contribute to pricing, scoping, and resource planning discussions with a practical understanding of profitability and delivery impact.
  • Delegate effectively and develop next‑level leaders through technical coaching and operational guidance.
  • Advance the team's use of technology and cloud‑based tools to support scalable, efficient outsourced accounting delivery.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field (required).
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including meaningful time in a outsourced accounting, and/or controller‑level role.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, meeting competing deadlines with precision.
  • Advanced QuickBooks Online skills; proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook, and Bill.com.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising accounting staff and managing client relationships.
  • Familiarity with treasury management and cash forecasting.
  • Proficiency with leading technologies, including client collaboration, task management, and financial close platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
How You’ll Stand Out
  • CPA license is a plus
  • Experience with cloud‑based ERP and accounting platforms such as Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Tipalti, Business Central and Rillet.
  • Prior experience in private industry accounting (e.g., Controller, Accounting Manager) with end‑to‑end accounting exposure
  • Knowledge of AI‑powered accounting tools and modern financial close automation.
  • Strong command of accounting principles and the ability to translate financial data into actionable business insight.

We embrace authenticity. Kaufman Rossin is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating a culture that reflects the diversity of our firm and clients. We encourage understanding, acceptance, and celebration among all people. That includes lifestyle, education, experience, race, ethnicity, age, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Differences make unique varieties.
