Outside Sales Contractor information

What is an outside sales contractor?

An Outside Sales Contractor is a professional who sells products or services by meeting clients and prospects in person, typically outside of an office setting. They are often independent contractors rather than employees, meaning they work on a contract basis and are usually paid through commissions or fees based on their sales performance. Their main responsibilities include generating leads, presenting offerings, negotiating deals, and closing sales. Outside Sales Contractors often have flexible schedules but are expected to meet sales targets and maintain strong client relationships. This role is common in industries like construction, wholesale, and business-to-business sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outside sales contractor?

To excel as an Outside Sales Contractor, you need strong sales acumen, knowledge of the products or services offered, and typically prior experience in sales or customer-facing roles. Familiarity with CRM software, sales tracking tools, and sometimes a valid driver's license are commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and resilience help build client relationships and persist through challenges. These abilities are crucial for generating leads, closing deals, and consistently meeting sales targets in a competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by outside sales contractors, and how can they be overcome?

Outside Sales Contractors often encounter challenges such as building a robust client base, managing a fluctuating schedule, and maintaining motivation while working independently. Success in this role typically requires strong self-discipline, effective time management, and proactive communication skills. Leveraging customer relationship management (CRM) tools, networking consistently, and setting clear daily goals can help contractors stay organized and meet targets. Collaborating with internal teams, such as marketing and support, also plays a key role in overcoming obstacles and delivering value to clients.

Job description

Outside Sales Representative

Base Salary $60,000 – $85,000

Commission + Bonus Uncapped Earning Potential

Schedule Monday – Friday • Full-Time

About SPEC Building Materials

SPEC Building Materials Corporation has been a trusted name in the wholesale distribution of premium roofing materials, equipment, and building products since 1973. With 46 branch locations across the Midwest, South, and Southeast, SPEC has built a 50-year reputation for quality, reliability, and genuine partnerships with contractors across the country.

This is not a company where you are a number. SPEC is a place where Outside Sales Representatives are given the tools, the territory, and the autonomy to build something real — a book of business, a network of trusted contractor relationships, and a career that compounds year over year.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a driven, relationship-first Outside Sales Representative to own a territory and grow it. This is a role for someone who knows how to earn a contractor's trust — not just earn a transaction. You will represent the full SPEC product line to commercial and residential roofing contractors, building the kind of partnerships that keep customers coming back and sending referrals.

If you are motivated by uncapped earning potential, enjoy being in the field, and take pride in being the person your customers call when they need something done right — this is the role you have been looking for.

What You'll Do
  • Own your territory — develop new accounts through strategic prospecting, cold calling, and networking while protecting and growing your existing customer base
  • Build genuine, long-term relationships with roofing contractors — commercial and residential — becoming their go-to resource for products, pricing, and solutions
  • Aggressively promote and sell the complete SPEC product line, positioning the right products for each contractor's specific project needs
  • Meet and exceed territory sales goals — with a comp structure that rewards every dollar you generate above baseline
  • Serve as a trusted product expert — advising customers on the full range of SPEC building materials, equipment, and services
  • Maintain strong vendor relationships to stay current on product developments, promotions, and market opportunities
  • Represent SPEC professionally in every customer interaction — in person, on the phone, and on the job site
What You Bring

Required

  • 2+ years of outside sales experience in building materials, roofing, or construction — with a track record of hitting and exceeding sales targets
  • Established relationships with roofing contractors (preferred) or the ability to build them quickly — you know how contractors think and what they need
  • Strong communication and presentation skills — you can walk a job site and walk a boardroom with equal confidence
  • Self-motivated and disciplined — you manage your own time, your own pipeline, and your own success
  • Solid negotiation and closing skills — you know how to move a deal forward without burning a relationship
  • Valid state-issued driver's license and reliable transportation

A Strong Plus

  • Existing book of business or contractor relationships in the territory
  • Deep product knowledge in commercial or residential roofing materials
  • Experience with CRM tools for pipeline management and account tracking
Why SPEC — What's In It for You
  • Base + Commission
  • $60K–$85K base + uncapped commission
  • Full Health Benefits
  • Medical, dental, vision & life insurance
  • Cell Phone
  • Provided
  • Travel Reimbursement
  • Business mileage covered and travel expenses
  • Paid Time Off
  • Competitive PTO policy
  • 401(k) + Match
  • Company matching retirement plan
The SPEC Difference

Since 1973, SPEC has grown to 36 locations not by being the cheapest option in the market — but by being the most reliable one. Contractors trust SPEC because SPEC delivers. Our Outside Sales team is the reason for that trust. They are the face of SPEC in every territory, every relationship, and every transaction.

When you join SPEC, you are joining a company with the infrastructure of a national distributor and the culture of a team that still remembers where it came from. Your success here is not just possible — it is expected, supported, and celebrated.

All inquiries are held in strict confidence. We review applications on a rolling basis and reach out directly to candidates who are a strong fit.
