The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities:

With considerable latitude for independent judgment and action, is responsible for instruction and direction of the Stationary Boiler Firemen on a shift and for efficient operation and safety of all related equipment to insure adequate steam supply required to meet the demands of the River Campus and Medical Center complex; and for the operation and safety of the chilled water plant and pumping station to satisfy requirements of the connected areas.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED: Boiler Room Foreman.SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED: Firemen. MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:I- High Pressure Boilers and Related Equipment.e.g. 150,000 P.P.H. B. and W. with spreader stoker and mechanically driven chain grates; 60,000 P.P.H. Combustion Engineering Boiler with manually op. grates.100,000 P.P.H. B.and W. with jet ignition stoker, and automatic mechanically driven chain grates. Bailey Automatic Boiler controls. Boiler feed water pumps (1 Electric and 3 Turbine Driven).Heavy duty fans. (Forced draft, induced draft, and over-fire air fans.)Electric hydraulic pumps used as motive power for stokers, grates etc.Electric driven centrifugal pumps for heater water supply.Condensate and vacuum pumps.Auxiliary steam turbines. Air compressors as applied to pneumatic controls. Electrically operated lorry (1200 to 1500 lbs. capacity).Reducing valves for controlling steam flow to feed water heater to the Steam Distribution Systems. Hydraulic stoker drive coal handling equipment. Outside air supply dampers. Fluid couplings and oil coolers on induced draft fans.Emergency generators and related switchgear. Terry Turbine drive. Chilled water circulating pump (37 1/2 to 100 H.P.-3000 to 6750 gallons per minute capacity). Refrigerant Receiver, Transfer pump. Auxiliary equipment such as: condensate pumps, condensate and cooling water pumps; air ejector condensers, pneumatic unit controls. Terry Turbine Driven- Chilled Water Circulating Pump (342 H.P.-13,500 G.P.M.)III- Pumping Station Equipment:e.g. Air compressor for pneumatically operated condensing water discharge valves. Chlorinator and related controls etc. Mechanical River Water Screens.Electrically-Driven Water Pumps (125 H.P. and 350 H.P.)TYPICAL DUTIES:1.Takes over operations from previous shift operating Engineer and acts as shift supervisor for efficient operation and maintenance of all major and auxiliary equipment in use. 2.Observes all operating equipment, machines, tanks, meters etc.3.Reads and records on daily log sheet all information required for initial hour of shift. 4.Oversees Firemen on duty to assure efficient operation of boilers. 5.Instructs Firemen in stationary engineering operations, procedures and practices as further training for Firemen. 6.Insures lubrication of all pumps, fans, compressors, emergency diesel-generator equipment., etc. 7.Regularly checks all Dunham Control heating panels located in Central Plant.8.Receives and logs all trouble calls and transfer calls to appropriate personnel for service. 9.Follows up service requests. 10. Removes ash and siftings from boilers in use. 11. Tests boiler water to determine amount of treatment to be added and/or blowdown required. 12.Starts and stops chilled water unit as required and hourly logs chilled water unit readings (temperature, pressure, R.P.M.s).13. As required, shuts down 4500 ton refrigeration unit and transfers refrigerant to storage receiver. 14. Checks equipment (at pumping station) and cleans screens as necessary. 15. Regularly inspects and observes all equipment for detection of mechanical malfunctioning. 16. Makes repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. 17. Changes recorder charts at 12 (M).18. Assists in annual boiler cleaning. 19. Keeps work area and equipment clean.20. Performs other related stationary operating duties as required or directed. QUALIFICATIONS: High School graduation (preferably Trade School) plus a minimum of 3 years as a "Fireman-Stationary Boilers" which has included instruction and training in the overall operation and maintenance of a high pressure steam generation system and auxiliary equipment. Experience required could vary according to an individual's demonstrated abilities and aptitudes. Requires good judgment, good physical condition, and the willingness to work in an atmosphere where more than normal dirt, dust and heat are present
