What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Output Based professional, and why are they important?

To excel in an output-based role, you need strong project management skills, goal-setting abilities, and a results-driven mindset, often supported by relevant industry experience or qualifications. Familiarity with productivity tracking tools, project management software, and performance metrics systems is commonly required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help individuals take ownership and deliver consistent results. These competencies ensure targets are met efficiently and work output aligns with organizational goals and standards.

How do Output Based roles typically measure and evaluate employee performance?

In Output Based roles, employee performance is primarily measured by the completion and quality of specific deliverables or results rather than by hours worked. This often means setting clear, quantifiable goals or targets at the outset, with regular check-ins to ensure progress. Employees in these roles are usually given more autonomy over how they manage their time and processes, but are held accountable for meeting predefined objectives. Performance reviews often focus on outcomes, and successful employees are those who consistently deliver results on schedule and to the required standard.

What are output-based jobs?

Output-based jobs are roles where compensation and performance are measured primarily by the results or deliverables an employee produces, rather than the hours they work. In these jobs, employers set clear goals or targets, and employees are evaluated based on their ability to meet or exceed these objectives. This approach is common in fields like sales, consulting, freelancing, or project management. Output-based work arrangements can offer flexibility and autonomy but also require strong self-management and accountability.

What is output-based?

Output-based jobs focus on the results or deliverables an employee produces rather than the hours worked. These roles often emphasize performance metrics, project completion, or specific targets, and may involve flexible schedules or remote work arrangements.

The Senior Product Manager, Workflow & Output Management owns the product vision and backlog for two connected domains within Inspections & Imaging.
  • The first is client-facing: The integrations and reporting that ensure inspection and imaging output reaches downstream clients accurately and reliably.
  • The second is internal-facing: The operational tools that inspection and imaging supervisors and managers use to monitor quality and manage day-to-day workflow.
  • This role translates needs from both audiences into clear product specifications and partners with engineering and cross-functional stakeholders to drive delivery.

What You'll Do
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Owns the backlog for client integrations, reporting, and internal workflow tooling, keeping it prioritized, well-specified, and aligned to Inspections & Imaging delivery commitments
  • Partners with engineering leads, operations, and client-facing teams to define requirements and drive features from discovery through delivery
  • Gathers and synthesizes input from workflow supervisors, managers, and client stakeholders to surface problems worth solving and validate proposed solutions
  • Writes clear problem and product documentation, (epic, feature, user stories, acceptance criteria) and specifications that engineers can execute with minimal ambiguity
  • Monitors integration health, reporting accuracy, and tool adoption; identifies patterns and escalates or resolves issues with appropriate urgency
  • Contributes to process improvement within the Inspections & Imaging Product team, including backlog hygiene, Rally discipline, and documentation standards

    • The right candidate may have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 2 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 1 years' experience in a related field; or 12 years' experience in a related field with no degree.
  • Experience owning and prioritizing a product backlog within an Agile or SAFe delivery framework, including writing epics, features, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, or equivalent) to improve personal productivity or drive AI-enabled transformation within a product or engineering team.
  • Experience partnering with engineering leads, operations teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to define requirements and drive features from discovery through delivery.
  • Experience with system and technology integrations, including client-facing data outputs such as API integrations, file deliveries, or automated reporting.
  • Experience with Agile project management tools such as Rally, Jira, or equivalent for backlog management, sprint planning, and documentation standards.
  • Experience gathering and synthesizing requirements from multiple stakeholder groups to identify problems and validate product solutions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with data reporting and analytics, including building or managing operational dashboards, production reports, or quality-audit workflows.
  • Experience with GitHub or similar version control platforms for specification management, documentation versioning, or project tracking.
  • Experience with B2B product management, including managing products or tools used by internal operations teams and external business clients.
  • Experience with APIs at a functional or conversational level, including defining integration requirements or managing API-based client deliverables.
  • Experience in an informal or formal leadership capacity over a product team, pod, or delivery stream, including mentoring peers or guiding junior product managers.
