Outdoor Apprentice information

What is an outdoor apprentice?

Outdoor Apprentices are entry-level individuals who gain hands-on experience and training in outdoor-related fields such as conservation, environmental education, or outdoor recreation. They work under the supervision of experienced professionals to develop practical skills in areas like trail maintenance, habitat restoration, guiding, or outdoor leadership. Apprenticeships often combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction, helping participants build a strong foundation for a career in the outdoors. These roles are ideal for those passionate about nature, sustainability, and working outside.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an outdoor apprentice during their first year?

As an Outdoor Apprentice, your first year typically involves assisting experienced guides or instructors with outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, or environmental education. You'll learn about safety protocols, group management, and basic outdoor skills through hands-on experience. Apprentices often rotate through various duties, from equipment maintenance to customer service, which provides a broad understanding of outdoor operations. This role offers valuable mentorship and the chance to develop both technical and soft skills, positioning you for advancement to lead guide or instructor roles in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outdoor apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outdoor Apprentice, you need a foundational knowledge of outdoor safety, basic survival skills, and a willingness to learn from experienced mentors, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with outdoor equipment, GPS devices, and certifications such as Wilderness First Aid or Leave No Trace are commonly required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication help apprentices excel in dynamic outdoor environments. These skills are vital for ensuring safety, learning efficiency, and contributing positively to group objectives in challenging outdoor settings.

Rogall Painting

Morro Bay, CA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Retirement

Posted 5 days ago

Job description

Want to learn a real trade and get paid while you do it? Rogall + Co. is hiring Apprentice Painters on California's Central Coast — no experience required. If you're dependable, willing to work with your hands, and want a career instead of just a job, we'll teach you the rest.

Since 2004, Rogall + Co. has protected coastal homes in and around Morro Bay through expert paint and wood restoration. As an apprentice, you'll learn from experienced craftspeople and build skills that last a lifetime.

What you'll do

  • Prep surfaces — sanding, scraping, masking, and cleaning — so coatings last
  • Help apply primers, paints, and protective coatings on homes
  • Set up and break down jobsites safely and keep them clean
  • Learn our proven process for defending Central Coast homes from sun, salt, and weather
  • Support the crew and grow toward becoming a full Painter

What we're looking for

  • No painting experience necessary — a strong work ethic matters most
  • Reliable, on time, and coachable
  • Comfortable with physical, outdoor work and being on a ladder
  • Able to lift and carry more than 50 lbs
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Available for daytime jobsite hours, Monday–Friday

Pay & benefits

  • $20–24 per hour, based on effort and how quickly you learn
  • Health/medical insurance
  • Paid, hands-on training and a clear path to advance to Painter
  • 401(k) retirement

Schedule & location: Full-time, Monday–Friday, daytime hours. Based in Morro Bay, CA, serving San Luis Obispo County and the Central Coast.
