Outbound Dock Associate information

What is an outbound dock associate?

Outbound Dock Associates are logistics professionals responsible for preparing, loading, and verifying outgoing shipments in a warehouse or distribution center. Their duties typically include organizing packages, ensuring orders are complete, operating equipment like forklifts or pallet jacks, and keeping work areas safe and efficient. They play a crucial role in the shipping process by making sure products are accurately loaded onto trucks for timely delivery. Attention to detail and physical stamina are important qualities for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outbound dock associate?

To thrive as an Outbound Dock Associate, you need basic warehouse operations knowledge, physical stamina, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with inventory management systems, handheld scanners, and pallet jacks or forklifts is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help ensure efficient order processing and safety. These skills are essential to maintain smooth logistics operations, minimize errors, and uphold workplace safety standards.

What are some typical challenges an outbound dock associate might face during busy shipping periods?

During peak shipping times, Outbound Dock Associates often encounter increased freight volume, tighter deadlines, and a more fast-paced environment. Balancing efficiency with accuracy is crucial, as mistakes in labeling or loading can delay shipments and impact customer satisfaction. Effective communication with team members and supervisors helps manage workflow and ensures safety protocols are maintained even under pressure.

•Collaborate with a passionate, mission-driven team making a measurable impact every day.

Role (Non-Exempt)

The Operations Lead runs the day-to-day flow of Clean the World's distribution and receiving center. This position schedules inbound and outbound loads, keeps inventory controls accurate, and directs the safe, organized movement of product through the dock and warehouse. A skilled forklift operator, the Operations Lead stages and organizes loads, builds and secures pallets, and keeps a fast-paced shipping and receiving operation running on time. Just as important, this role sets the standard for how the floor works thinking independently, solving problems in the moment, and leading others to operate safely and efficiently. The Operations Lead works closely with the hospitality, recycling, and events teams to keep product moving.

Key responsibilities (not limited to)

•Schedule and coordinate inbound and outbound loads, sequencing dock activity to keep shipping and receiving on time.

•Maintain inventory controls and accuracy in assigned areas; identify and resolve discrepancies.

•Operate forklifts and material-handling equipment skillfully and safely to stage, move, and load product.

•Stage and organize loads, build up and secure pallets, and optimize warehouse space and flow.

•Ensure inbound shipments are received according to CTW policies and procedures, and outbound shipments are properly wrapped, secured, and documented for transit.

•Lead and direct other associates on the floor, setting the pace and the standard for safe, efficient work.

•Anticipate and resolve bottlenecks in a fast-paced environment; make sound calls independently and escalate what crosses your authority.

•Own safety on the floor — enforce PPE use, safe forklift and dock practices, lockout/tagout where applicable, and prompt hazard/incident reporting.

•Keep the distribution and receiving area clean, organized, and audit-ready.

Qualifications

Education

•High school diploma or equivalent.

•Forklift certification, or ability to certify within 30 days of hire.

•OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification within 90 days of hire.

•Flexibility in scheduling.

Experience

•Minimum of 3 years in a warehouse, distribution, or logistics environment, including inbound/outbound load scheduling and material handling.

•Demonstrated experience operating forklifts and managing inventory controls.

•Proven ability to lead or direct others and work independently in a fast-paced, high-throughput setting.

Skills

•Skilled forklift operator with strong load-staging and pallet-building ability.

•Working knowledge of inventory/warehouse management systems and shipping/receiving documentation.

•Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

•Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions on the floor without waiting to be told.

•Clear communicator who can lead a team and set a safety-first standard.

Physical Demands

•Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and occasionally more with assistance.

•Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching above shoulder, and repetitive movement for extended periods.

•Safe operation of forklifts and material-handling equipment throughout the shift.

Environmental Conditions

•Warehouse and dock environment, including exposure to excessive heat and/or cold, noise, dust, and fragrances.

•Regular work near active forklift traffic, loading docks, and moving equipment.

•Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in designated areas.
