About The Position
The Transmission Outage Planning Engineer develops well-planned consistent job packages and comprehensive outage schedules for Transmission, incorporating transmission engineering design, construction activities and transmission maintenance activities.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Work with project management, engineering, construction, and operations teams to develop and maintain accurate outage sequence plans throughout the life cycle of a project. The outage sequence plans should be optimized to ensure system reliability is maintained while safely and efficiently executing capital construction and maintenance work.
  • Coordinate with Ameren Missouri, Ameren Illinois, and Ameren Transmission maintenance organizations to efficiently schedule maintenance outages. Ensure outages are well- coordinated with internal and external parties including the distribution control offices, generation facilities, load customers, neighboring utilities, and Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).
  • Enter outage requests with the MISO via the MISO outage request portal per the submission guidelines.
  • Apply expertise to assess the Bulk Electric System (BES) and perform power flow studies to identify conflicting outages. Work with project teams to adjust outage schedules and/or real-time operations and MISO to develop mitigation options.
  • Coordinate with operations support teams to ensure that equipment ratings databases, EMS and MISO network models, and EMS displays are updated accurately to reflect changes in substation equipment, system topology, and ratings.
  • Assist Ameren's Transmission Operations Supervisors and Transmission Dispatchers as needed with switching plans, WPA, and to implement real-time actions that ensure the safe, stable, and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System.
  • Provide transmission operations input and technical expertise to capital project scope development work/teams and offer input from an Operations perspective in terms of outage constraints, operational flexibility, and system enhancements.
  • Provide mentorship and informal leadership to less-experienced coworkers.
  • Perform special projects as assigned

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited University required; Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university is preferred. Experience in substation or line design, substation or line maintenance, system relay, construction, operations, power plant or project management is preferred.
In addition to the above qualifications, the successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Ability to work on complex projects and to work effectively with conflicting priorities and stressful situations in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and computer skills.
  • Maintain knowledge of generation methods and equipment and transmission systems/equipment and act accordingly.
  • Maintain knowledge of MISO operational reliability practices and SERC (NERC regional reliability entity) supplements and their respective policies and act accordingly. Possess knowledge of interconnected system operations, emergency operations, restoration procedures, generation methods, operating reserve requirements, voltage and VAR control and power flows.
  • Ability to use computers and analytical methods to analyze various operational problems.
  • Must pass NERC Cyber Security Background check.
  • Knowledge of EMS / SCADA and/or industrial control systems and processes.
  • Competency in Transmission-specific computer applications.

Compensation Range:
$71,100.00 - $215,300.00
* This pay range encompasses multiple levels of the role. Career level and compensation depends upon applicant's credentials.
At Ameren, base salary is one component of a competitive compensation package for employees. Our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered. Roles are eligible for additional rewards including annual incentive payments based on individual and company performance.
