General Description:
The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician I is an entry-level role responsible for performing routine, foundational tasks involved in the preparation and distribution of medications under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role focuses on developing core technical skills, learning pharmacy workflows, and supporting patient care activities in the outpatient pharmacy setting.
Essential Responsibilities:
Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities, with or without an accommodation, may result in disqualification from the position.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as data entry, third-party adjudication, maintaining patient profiles, filing prescription documents, and answering phones.
  • Develops basic familiarity with copay assistance and grant funding options to support patient drug affordability.
  • Fulfills prescription orders by retrieving medications and accurately labeling and dispensing the correct amount for pharmacist verification.
  • Participates in inventory control activities including monitoring, dating, invoicing, stocking the pharmacy, and assisting with preparation of purchase orders.
  • Assists with accounting and billing-related tasks such as basic recordkeeping, accounts receivable support, third-party billing, and posting under supervision.
  • Helps maintain a clean, organized, and orderly pharmacy environment.
  • Promptly reports safety concerns, discrepancies, or medication errors to a supervising pharmacist or manager.
  • Stores and preserves biologicals, vaccines, serums, and other medications subject to deterioration, using proper refrigeration and storage techniques.
  • Demonstrates beginning competence in addressing third-party claim rejections and initiating prior authorizations with guidance from senior technicians or pharmacists.
  • Develops familiarity with OUH's patient assistance programs and traditional copay assistance workflows.
  • Demonstrates exposure to basic 340B concepts and processes.
  • Assists with medication therapy management (MTM) documentation or workflows as directed.
  • Completes annual skills assessments and competency validations under supervision.
  • Actively participates in training, seeks feedback, and focuses on developing foundational technical and customer service skills.
  • Identifies basic workflow concerns and escalates them to senior technicians or leadership for guidance.
  • Performs duties according to established procedures and escalates questions or uncertainties appropriately.

General Responsibilities:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: At least one (1) year of experience as a pharmacy technician required.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Active permit as a Pharmacy Technician by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy or ability to achieve permit within 90 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic cash handling skills.
  • Fundamental computer and math skills.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy of data and information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and procedures.
