Ot Security Engineers specialize in securing industrial control systems and operational technology environments, while Network Security Engineers focus on protecting enterprise networks and data. Both roles require similar certifications but differ in work environment and industry focus, catering to distinct security needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OT Security Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OT Security Engineer, you need expertise in industrial control systems (ICS), cybersecurity principles, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools like SIEM platforms, network monitoring systems, and certifications such as GICSP or CISSP are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help differentiate top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for protecting critical infrastructure, mitigating cyber threats, and ensuring safe, reliable operations in industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by OT Security Engineers when securing industrial control systems (ICS)?

OT Security Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating modern security measures without disrupting legacy industrial systems, which may not be designed with cybersecurity in mind. Ensuring minimal downtime during patching or updates and coordinating with operations teams to schedule maintenance windows can be complex. Additionally, balancing robust security protocols with the need for high system availability and safety is a key concern. Collaborating with IT and OT personnel to bridge knowledge gaps and align security policies is also a frequent part of the role.

What are OT Security Engineers?

OT Security Engineers are professionals who specialize in protecting operational technology (OT) systems, such as industrial control systems and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, from cyber threats. They work to identify vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and monitor networks to ensure the safety and reliability of critical infrastructure. Their role is especially important in industries like manufacturing, energy, and utilities, where OT environments are essential to daily operations. OT Security Engineers bridge the gap between IT security and industrial operations, ensuring both are adequately protected from cyber risks.

Job description

You are the technical SME responsible for Zero Trust security deployment across physical security, OT, SCADA, and IoT environments at over 100 facilities. You are part of a team that designs site-specific security architectures, govern a purpose-built OT Zero Trust platform, manage partner integrations, and ensure every network-connected physical security device achieves compliance without disruptive equipment replacement.ย
This is a key role with verification of CISSP and other certifications.ย

WHAT YOU'LL OWN:
  • Zero Trust architecture design across 10โ€“12 distinct facility site types at scale.
  • Configuration, governance, and ongoing management of an OT-focused Zero Trust platform (FreeWave Zentry).ย
  • Management of Fortinet security integration across all deployed environments.ย
  • OT/SCADA/IoT network segmentation โ€” physical security traffic isolated from enterprise and IT networks.ย
  • Remote technical authority to Field Engineer leads during active deployments across all regions.ย
  • Vulnerability management for physical security and OT/IoT environments: scanning, patching, exception documentation.ย
  • Coordination with prime contractor cybersecurity team operating under the federal ATO governance framework.ย
  • Legacy equipment exception management: documenting devices that cannot be immediately patched or replaced.ย

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Ideal experience 5+ years OT/IoT security: operational technology environments, not IT security alone.
  • Zero Trust architecture design for OT/SCADA/ICS environments.ย
  • Network segmentation isolating OT traffic from enterprise and IT networks.ย
  • Federal FISMA and NIST 800-53 compliance experience.ย
  • Documented OT security deployments in manufacturing, critical infrastructure, or federal environments.ย

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Zero Trust experience.
  • Fortinet Federal product suite.ย
  • ATO process support โ€” SSP development, POA&M management, security assessment documentation.ย
  • Physical security system integration โ€” IP cameras, access control, badge systems, emergency notification.ย
  • Prior federal agency cybersecurity experience.ย

CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Required: CISSP โ€” Certified Information Systems Security Professional.ย
  • Fortinet NSE4 โ€” Network Security Professional (minimum).ย
  • [Preferred] Fortinet NSE7 โ€” Enterprise Firewall or SD-WAN.ย
  • [Preferred] GICSP โ€” Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional.ย
  • [Preferred] CISM โ€” Certified Information Security Manager.ย
  • Some knowledge of: FreeWave Zentry Platform Certification.
