Job description

Michigan Broadband Services, a leading provider of high-speed broadband and communications services, is seeking an OSP Telecommunications Field Engineer to join our growing team.  


In this position you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and maintaining our fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure.  This position combines field engineering, network design, site analysis, and project coordination to ensure reliable, high-quality network performance.  The ideal candidate is technically skilled, detail-oriented, and enjoys working in both office and field environments to support infrastructure projects throughout Michigan.


Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed engineering site surveys to assess structural, electrical, environmental, and facility readiness for telecommunications equipment installation.
  • Design fiber optic routes and outside plant (OSP) cable projects using CAD and engineering standards.
  • Develop construction prints and engineering documentation for fiber network expansions and upgrades.
  • Coordinate the relocation of fiber and copper facilities to support roadway improvement projects and other utility relocations.
  • Evaluate existing telecommunications infrastructure and recommend improvements to optimize network performance and reliability.
  • Work closely with utility companies, contractors, municipalities, and permitting agencies to coordinate pole transfers, make-ready work, and project timelines.
  • Configure, install, test, and troubleshoot active network equipment and optical transport systems.
  • Perform field inspections to verify construction quality and ensure projects meet engineering specifications and industry standards.
  • Assist with network planning, capacity upgrades, and infrastructure expansion projects.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, as-built drawings, and engineering records.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Telecommunications preferred; 3-5 years of relevant telecommunications engineering experience will be considered.
  • Experience designing fiber optic networks, outside plant (OSP), or telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and interpreting engineering drawings, construction prints, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic construction practices, utility coordination, and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with routing, switching, optical transport equipment, or other active network technologies is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Frequent travel throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula is required.
