How much do orthoptist job jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for orthoptist job in the United States is $17.43, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $18.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some of the common challenges an orthoptist may face when working with pediatric patients?

Orthoptists frequently work with children who may have difficulty communicating their symptoms or cooperating during assessments. Building trust and using age-appropriate techniques are essential for obtaining accurate results. Additionally, maintaining patience and adapting testing strategies to suit each child's needs is a key aspect of the role. Collaborating closely with parents, ophthalmologists, and other healthcare professionals helps ensure the best possible care and treatment outcomes.

What are orthoptists?

Orthoptists are healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating disorders of eye movements and problems with how the eyes work together, such as strabismus (eye misalignment) and amblyopia (lazy eye). They work closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists, particularly in pediatric care, to provide non-surgical management and therapeutic interventions. Orthoptists often perform vision assessments, develop treatment plans, and educate patients and their families about eye health. Their role is vital in helping patients achieve optimal visual function, especially for children and those with complex eye movement disorders.

What is the difference between Orthoptist Job vs Optometrist Job?

AspectOrthoptist JobOptometrist Job
CredentialsOrthoptist certification, specialized training in eye movement and binocular visionDoctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, eye care centers, often working with ophthalmologistsPrivate practices, clinics, retail optical stores, providing comprehensive eye exams
Employer & Industry UsageEye hospitals, pediatric clinics, vision therapy centersOptometry clinics, healthcare providers, retail optical chains

While both Orthoptists and Optometrists work in eye care, Orthoptists focus on diagnosing and treating eye movement disorders and binocular vision issues, often working alongside ophthalmologists. Optometrists provide comprehensive eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and manage general eye health. Understanding these differences helps patients find the right specialist for their needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Orthoptist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Orthoptist, you need a strong background in vision science, ocular anatomy, and orthoptic assessment, usually supported by a relevant degree and professional registration. Familiarity with diagnostic tools like synoptophores, Hess charts, and electronic medical record systems is essential. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and patience help Orthoptists effectively support patients of all ages and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurate diagnosis, successful treatment, and optimal patient care in eye health settings.
