Job description

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a full time 4 days/40 hours NP/PA  for our Westbrook clinic The successful candidate will have a strong oncology/hematology background and be comfortable seeing a broad spectrum of cancer patients. The NP/PA collaborates closely with physicians diagnosing, treating, and managing patient care in a fast-paced outpatient environment.

NECS is a private medical practice composed of 18 oncologists and hematologists serving the region from five distinct locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Elicit medical histories of patients, perform physical examinations, and develop a differential diagnosis/problem list.
  • Assess the physical and psychosocial status of patients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies,
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests and radiologic data, diagnose, and treat co-morbid illness within the scope of a patient's hematologic/oncologic diagnosis, perform procedures as delegated by the attending physician, prescribe medications in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Determine the eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials based on findings.
  • Evaluate the quality of care provided and recommend changes for improvement.
  • Initiate appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the patient.
  • Educate patients and families about the disease process and treatment.
  • Provide information to patients and families related to symptom management and psychosocial response to the diagnosis of cancer and related treatment.

Travel: travel to other NECS locations on an occasional basis may be needed

Weekends: This position will participate with other practice NP/PAs in weekend urgent care coverage. 4-5 times per year paid at a premium.


  • State of Maine Nurse Practitioner/Physician's Associate license required or the ability to obtain.
  • Three (3) years' experience in Oncology and Hematology.
  • Master's Degree Required.
  • Ability to collaborate with physicians, nurses, and support staff.
  • Ability to communicate with patients in a clear, concise, and compassionate manner.
