How much do orbital analyst jobs pay per year?
What is an orbital analyst?
An Orbital Analyst is responsible for tracking and predicting the movement of satellites, spacecraft, and other objects in space. They use mathematical models and simulation tools to analyze orbital trajectories, assess potential collisions, and ensure safe operation of space missions. Their work is critical for satellite communication, defense applications, and space exploration. Orbital Analysts often collaborate with engineers, mission planners, and government agencies to support space situational awareness and mission success.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an orbital analyst?
To thrive as an Orbital Analyst, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and astrodynamics, typically supported by a degree in aerospace engineering or a related field. Proficiency with orbital simulation software, satellite tracking tools, and programming languages like MATLAB or Python is highly valued, along with certifications such as Security Clearance when required. Exceptional analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities help you excel in fast-paced, detail-oriented environments. These skills are vital to ensure the accurate monitoring and prediction of satellite trajectories, contributing to effective mission planning and space asset management.
What are typical challenges faced by orbital analysts in their daily work?
Orbital Analysts frequently encounter challenges related to rapidly changing space environments, such as adapting to new satellite launches, collision avoidance alerts, and unexpected orbital maneuvers. You may need to analyze large data sets in time-sensitive situations, often collaborating closely with engineers, mission planners, and military or commercial space operators. Staying up-to-date with advancements in orbital mechanics and tracking technologies is also essential to maintain accuracy. Overcoming these challenges requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication within a multidisciplinary team, making the work both dynamic and rewarding for those who thrive on problem-solving.

The successful candidate will maintain awareness on high-interest threat activity and support analysis, planning, training and exercise activities as an expert in space threat capabilities and orbital mechanics. Mission protection responsibilities include monitoring I&W systems, reporting threat risks and asset system operational statuses, critically analyzing threat pattern of behaviors, and identifying and mitigating intelligence gaps in adversary capabilities.
The Operations Lead will work continuously to ensure existing and developing system tool capabilities are expediently integrated in current operational procedures, training materials and job aids. Additionally, the lead must understand system workflows, mission impacts during times of degradation and have the ability create temporary procedures for continuity of operations.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain dual certification in BSA and WO 24/7 crew positions and continue proficiency on applicable system tools (i.e., Systems Tool Kit (STK), and other I&W tools)
- Development TTPs, COAs and work to improve thresholds for checklist entry criteria
- Assist system integration efforts of latest I&W software tools and capabilities, guide alerting and entry criteria thresholds as a mission subject-matter-expert
- Report on operations capabilities, system degradation, latencies and statuses that may impact the mission
- Detect threat activity and maintain accurate terrestrial and space catalog databases

- Analyze various satellite state position data sources, make pattern-of-life based assessments and report on vulnerabilities to mission assets
- Prioritize and execute collection tasking using available asset resources
- Participate in real world and exercise space event planning and execution efforts
- Maintain Awareness of current high-interest terrestrial and space-based activity affecting space domain
- Perform contingency tasks; initiate personnel recalls (when directed) and establish operations loops
- Identify any system or intelligence gaps and assumptions that may pose a risk to mission success and report, manage and mitigate those risks
- Work full-time on-site at a government facility in Springfield, VA
