Common Oracle jobs include Oracle Database Administrator (DBA), Oracle Developer, and Oracle Cloud Engineer. Responsibilities vary by role but often involve SQL, PL/SQL, and Oracle-specific tools. Many Oracle jobs require certifications like Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) to validate expertise.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Oracle Database Administrator?

An Oracle Database Administrator’s day-to-day tasks often include monitoring database performance, performing regular backups and recovery operations, implementing security measures, and applying patches or updates. You’ll work with developers and IT teams to troubleshoot problems, optimize queries, and ensure consistent data availability. Depending on the organization, you may also help design new databases and participate in disaster recovery planning. These responsibilities require both technical expertise and strong collaboration skills to support the organization’s data needs effectively.

Job description

About the Role

GH LLC is looking for a hands-on, technically deep Oracle DBA to serve as the primary Oracle database administrator on a small but high-impact Database Services team. You will report directly to the Database Services Manager, who serves as your secondary DBA and organizational point of contact, but day-to-day database administration, performance management, and technical decision-making will be yours to own.

Our Oracle environment centers on a two-node RAC cluster with Data Guard standby, supporting core business operations. The databases are production-critical and in active use. There is meaningful work ahead - performance tuning, index and storage remediation, security hardening, a version upgrade, and a server infrastructure migration on the horizon - and we are looking for someone who can build a stable, well-managed foundation over time.

We understand that walking into a new environment takes time. You will be given the opportunity to acclimate, learn the system, and get your footing before being expected to drive major changes. Sustainable, well-understood work is the goal - not speed at the expense of stability.

What You’ll Be Walking Into

Several initiatives are already underway or in planning, and you will be inheriting them in various stages of progress:

Active Work
  • Index rationalization and remediation on high-volume production tables
  • SQL execution plan stabilization across critical workloads
  • Space reclamation on production storage
  • Connection pool configuration and session management review
Near-Term Roadmap

The following are planned initiatives. Prior experience with any of these is a plus, but not a requirement - what matters most is the ability to learn, plan, and execute methodically.

  • Oracle patching schedule development and ongoing patch management
  • Oracle version upgrade planning and execution  -  the upgrade will also be the gate for several downstream projects
  • Oracle APEX and ORDS deployment for internal tooling  -  scoped to begin after the version upgrade is complete
  • Lower environment refresh process design and automation
  • Privilege and password security hardening across the Oracle environment
  • Table partitioning evaluation and implementation for large, high-growth tables
  • Documentation and operational runbook development
  • Server infrastructure migration  -  managed by our external DBA vendor, Datavail - you will have visibility and input, and your perspective will be valued as someone who will live with the outcome
Core Responsibilities
Production Database Administration
  • Serve as the primary Oracle DBA for a production RAC environment with Data Guard standby
  • Monitor and tune performance using Oracle Enterprise Manager, AWR, ASH, and ADDM
  • Manage storage, capacity planning, and tablespace health
  • Maintain a proactive patching and version management schedule
  • Respond to production incidents, diagnose root cause, and implement durable fixes
  • Manage backup and recovery procedures in coordination with infrastructure team
Performance & Optimization
  • Investigate and resolve SQL plan instability using SPM baselines and SQL Profiles
  • Design and maintain indexing strategies aligned with actual application usage patterns
  • Tune connection pools, RAC-specific configuration, and parallel execution settings
  • Identify and remediate locking, contention, and wait event issues
Security & Standards
  • Manage Oracle user accounts, roles, profiles, and least-privilege service accounts
  • Enforce session controls, password policies, and audit configurations
  • Partner with the development team on stored procedure design, code review, and change management
  • Maintain and build out DBA documentation, runbooks, and operational standards
Collaboration & Projects
  • Work closely with application, development, and infrastructure teams
  • Coordinate with Datavail on infrastructure-layer and migration tasks
  • Contribute to project planning and provide technical input on architecture decisions
  • Support APEX and ORDS administration as the internal footprint grows post-upgrade
Required
  • 5+ years of hands-on Oracle DBA experience in production environments
  • Strong expertise in Oracle 19c (or comparable recent version) administration
  • Proven production experience with Oracle RAC and Data Guard
  • Strong SQL and PL/SQL proficiency - you read and write production code, not just run scripts
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager for monitoring and diagnostics
  • Proficiency with AWR, ASH, ADDM, and execution plan analysis
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve performance issues
  • Comfortable operating with broad ownership in a small team environment
  • In-office presence three days a week is required
  • Pre-employment background and drug screenings are required
Strongly Preferred
  • Experience with Oracle patching and version upgrade planning and execution
  • Index lifecycle management, partitioning, and large table reorganization
  • SQL Plan Management (SPM) and SQL Profiles
  • Connection pool administration experience (DRCP or shared server)
  • Lower environment refresh process design or automation
  • Oracle APEX and/or ORDS administration
  • Exposure to infrastructure or storage migrations
  • Experience writing and maintaining technical documentation and runbooks
Nice to Have
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or equivalent certification
  • Background in financial services or transaction-processing environments
Who We’re Looking For

The right person for this role is a technician first. You are most comfortable when you are diagnosing something, fixing something, or building something - not in meetings talking about doing those things. You are methodical under pressure, you document your work, and you do not consider a problem solved until you understand why it happened.

You are not deterred by a backlog or by imperfect documentation. You have walked into environments that needed attention before, and you approached the situation as an opportunity rather than a liability. You know how to prioritize, communicate tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders, and build trust through steady, reliable execution.

You will have real ownership here. Your recommendations will be heard, your expertise will be respected, and the work you do will have a direct and visible impact on the stability and performance of systems that matter to the business.
