What is an Oracle Database Programmer?

Oracle Database Programmers are IT professionals who design, develop, and maintain databases using Oracle Database software. They write and optimize SQL queries, create database schemas, and implement data security measures. Their work ensures that data can be stored, accessed, and managed efficiently within an organization. Additionally, they may troubleshoot performance issues, automate processes, and collaborate with other developers or administrators to support business applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Oracle Database Programmer?

To thrive as an Oracle Database Programmer, you need strong SQL and PL/SQL programming skills, a solid understanding of database design, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Proficiency with Oracle Database tools such as Oracle SQL Developer, experience with version control systems, and relevant Oracle certifications (like OCP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and address complex technical issues. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure database performance, security, and reliability in enterprise environments.

What are some common challenges Oracle Database Programmers face when optimizing database performance?

Oracle Database Programmers often encounter challenges such as identifying inefficient queries, managing indexing strategies, and balancing system resources to prevent bottlenecks. They must analyze execution plans, tune SQL statements, and collaborate with developers and DBAs to ensure optimal application performance. Keeping up with Oracle's evolving optimization features and understanding the specific workload patterns of their organization are also key aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Oracle Database Programmer vs SQL Developer?

This position is primarily focused on hands-on SQL and PL/SQL development, production debugging, script remediation, ad hoc data analysis, and the maintenance of data feeds and integration endpoints.
The ideal candidate has expertise in Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, along with complementary database administration skills that support effective production troubleshooting, performance tuning, deployment, recovery, and collaboration with DBA and infrastructure teams.
Required Skills

  • Advanced expertise in Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, including packages, procedures, functions, triggers, views, materialized views, dynamic SQL, collections, bulk processing, exception handling, and database APIs.
  • Extensive experience debugging and troubleshooting complex SQL and PL/SQL code in development, test, and production environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Analyze existing database code and business logic.
    • Identify defects, data issues, and performance bottlenecks.
    • Rewrite, refactor, and optimize existing scripts.
    • Develop and maintain operational and production-support scripts.
    • Create ad hoc queries for data analysis, reporting, reconciliation, validation, and issue resolution.
  • Strong experience maintaining and supporting data feeds and system integrations, including:
    • Apache NiFi data flows and endpoints.
    • AWS services, interfaces, and endpoints.
    • APIs and service-based integrations.
    • File-based data transfers and batch interfaces.
    • Upstream and downstream application dependencies.
    • Data validation, reconciliation, exception handling, and feed monitoring.
  • Experience diagnosing data-feed and integration failures by tracing issues across database objects, PL/SQL processes, NiFi flows, AWS endpoints, files, APIs, and dependent systems.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL performance tuning, including execution-plan analysis, optimizer statistics, indexing, partitioning, query optimization, locking, concurrency, and wait-event analysis.
  • Experience using Oracle diagnostic and performance tools such as AWR, ASH, ADDM, SQL Trace, TKPROF, and Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control.
  • Experience supporting high-volume data processing, batch jobs, ETL workflows, data conversion, data migration, and data-reconciliation processes.
  • Working knowledge of database application design, data modeling, schema development, and database object management sufficient to maintain and enhance scalable, reliable database solutions.
  • Experience deploying SQL, PL/SQL, schema, and configuration changes through structured development, testing, validation, and production-release processes.
  • Familiarity with source control, code review, release documentation, rollback planning, and automated or repeatable database deployment practices.
  • Complementary Oracle database administration experience, including working knowledge of:
    • Oracle RAC.
    • RMAN backup and recovery.
    • Oracle Data Guard.
    • Database security, roles, privileges, and auditing.
    • Tablespaces, storage, sessions, locks, and database-object management.

  • Debug and resolve complex SQL, PL/SQL, data, and production-processing issues.
  • Review, rewrite, refactor, and optimize existing SQL and PL/SQL scripts.
  • Develop ad hoc queries and scripts to support investigations, reporting, reconciliation, data correction, and operational requests.
  • Maintain and enhance PL/SQL packages, procedures, functions, triggers, batch jobs, and database interfaces.
