About the Role
Help shape the future of enterprise database platforms in the cloud. We are seeking a motivated, technically strong Cloud Database Administrator to design, build, automate, and support modern database services across AWS, Azure, and hybrid environments. This role is ideal for a cloud-savvy database professional ready to contribute to AI-enabled solutions that modernize enterprise-scale database platforms.

This is a HYBRID role based on our Scarborough location at 4100 Gordon Baker Road.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, engineer, deploy, and support cloud database platforms, with a strong focus on AWS RDS, Amazon Redshift, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Modernize existing database environments by supporting migrations, upgrades, platform transitions, and cloud adoption initiatives across AWS, Azure, and on-premises database platforms.
  • Design, build and enhance automation for database provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, monitoring, and operational maintenance using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and/or Configuration as Code (CaC).
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and database deployment workflows using tools such as GitHub, Ansible, Liquibase, AWS CDK, Azure CDKTF, scripting, and SQL automation.
  • Monitor database health, capacity, availability, performance, and cost efficiency across production and non-production environments.
  • Troubleshoot incidents, investigate problems, support database change requests, and drive timely resolution of operational issues.
  • Identify database performance improvement opportunities and implement tuning strategies for SQL, storage, indexing, workload patterns, and cloud resource utilization.
  • Maintain backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery practices to ensure database platforms are resilient, recoverable, and aligned with business needs.
  • Apply security, audit, governance, vulnerability management, and compliance practices to database platforms in a regulated enterprise environment.
  • Collaborate with application teams, cloud engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and operations partners to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable database solutions.
  • Respond to critical issues and participate in required 24x7 on-call and/or shift support for enterprise database services.

KEY Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on Database Administration (DBA) experience, with strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server AND either AWS database services (RDS and Amazon Redshift) or Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience with AWS CDK OR Azure CDKTF to provision and maintain Cloud related database services.
  • Hands-on experience with automation, scripting, DevSecOps, and database deployment practices using tools such as Ansible, GitHub, Liquibase, shell scripting, Python, SQL, Terraform, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with AI-enabled productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot.
  • Hands-on experience or strong working knowledge of AWS and Azure cloud services, such as cloud networking concepts, identity and access management, Entra ID, monitoring, backup, encryption, and operational support practices.
  • Solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle, change management, incident management, and production support practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics clearly to application teams, technology partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with others and take ownership of the assigned responsibilities.
  • Stay adaptable and flexible.
  • Willing to learn from others and help others when needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical work experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with other DBMS: Oracle, Postgres, MySQL.
  • Experience with the IT service management tool, ServiceNow.
  • Familiarity with the observability tool, Dynatrace.

Salary:

$75,900.00 - $141,900.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.
