Optical Assistant Jobs in Slidell, LA (NOW HIRING)

St. Tammany Eye Care is seeking a friendly, motivated, and detail-oriented Optician / Eyewear Consultant to join our growing private eye care practice.

Previous optical experience is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, has strong customer service and sales skills, pays close attention to detail, and is interested in developing a long-term career in the optical field.

What You’ll Do:

Eyewear Styling & Patient Service

• Help patients select frames based on prescription, fit, lifestyle, personal style, and budget
• Educate patients about lens options, materials, coatings, progressive lenses, sunglasses, and other eyewear products
• Provide personalized recommendations without high-pressure selling
• Explain pricing, insurance benefits, allowances, upgrades, and patient costs
• Create a welcoming and professional experience from frame selection through final dispensing

Optical Skills:

For candidates without optical experience, training will be provided in:

• Taking accurate optical measurements, including PDs and segment heights
• Understanding spectacle prescriptions
• Proper frame fitting and adjustments
• Dispensing completed eyewear
• Troubleshooting frame, lens, prescription, and adaptation concerns
• Performing basic frame repairs and maintenance
• Understanding lens materials, designs, coatings, and progressive lenses

Orders & Insurance:

• Enter and submit accurate eyewear orders
• Review orders for completeness and accuracy
• Communicate with optical laboratories regarding orders and special requests
• Learn to process remakes, warranties, and laboratory corrections
• Understand and apply vision-plan benefits
• Maintain accurate patient and order documentation

Teamwork:

• Work collaboratively with optometrists, technicians, front-office staff, and other opticians
• Assist coworkers during high-volume periods
• Communicate effectively regarding patient concerns and orders
• Help maintain an organized, professional optical department
• Cross-train in related patient-service functions as needed

Experience:

Optical experience is a plus, but not required.

Candidates with experience in any of the following are encouraged to apply:

Applicants with previous professional optician experience may qualify for higher starting compensation based on experience and skill level.

Schedule:

Full-time, in-person position with a consistent weekday schedule. Specific hours will be discussed during the interview process.
