As a Overdose Surveillance & Planning Specialist at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.
Location: North GA Health District Office - Dalton, Georgia
Job Responsibilities
Job Summary: The Overdose Surveillance and Prevention Epidemiologist works within the North Georgia Health District(NGHD) to help close the gap between local law enforcement and the District and State Public Health, and the planning and treatment communities by enhancing High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area's existing partnerships with these communities with an emphasis on de-duplication and coordination of efforts. Assist with related infectious disease investigations. In addition to the regular duties of this position will assist with data collection, analysis, and interpretation of public health data and other functions that support the mission, vision, values,and strategic plan of the organization.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work with established partnerships developed through the Emergency Preparedness and Epidemiology programs to facilitate Opioid surveillance and planning efforts between public health and public safety entities and prevention and treatment coalitions.
  • Determine and fill gaps within established partnerships.
  • Data sharing, joint initiatives, and policy consideration.
  • Provision of training on state and district Opioid & Substance Use response initiatives.
  • Supports or leads local opioid prevention and response initiatives in the six counties within NGHD
  • Prepare and submit reports that deemed necessary in a timely matter
  • Provides support to the Office of Epidemiology, Community Assessment, and Research Initiatives through data collection, analysis, and interpretation of public health data.
  • Support infectious disease investigations such as enteric diseases and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Attends conferences, educational webinars and meetings to increase knowledge of best practices.
  • Participate in at least one Georgia Opioid Strategic Work Plan Group
  • Attend health fairs or community events to education public on harm reduction, infectious diseases, and Opioid resources.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma/GED and completion of 90 quarter hours (60 semester hours) at an accredited college or university.
Note: An equivalent combination of knowledge, education, job or intern experience, training, or certifications that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully perform the job at the level listed may be substituted year-over-year
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of an Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related field. -Previous work experience with notifiable disease including hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Experience with public speaking including presentations with stakeholders as well as community groups.
  • Experience interviewing clients who may be using illegal substances or are in recovery.
