How much do ophthalmologist pay jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for ophthalmologist pay in the United States is $286,030.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $250,000.00 and $326,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Will ophthalmology be replaced by AI?

Ophthalmologists perform complex medical and surgical eye care that currently requires human judgment and hands-on skills, which AI cannot fully replicate. AI tools are increasingly used to assist with diagnostics and image analysis, but they complement rather than replace ophthalmologists in clinical practice.

What type of ophthalmologist gets paid the most?

Ophthalmologists specializing in retinal surgery or oculoplastic surgery tend to have the highest salaries due to the complexity and specialized skills required. Subspecialists often earn more than general ophthalmologists, especially those performing advanced procedures or working in private practices and academic settings. Certification and experience also influence earning potential.

What is the difference between Ophthalmologist Pay vs Optometrist Pay?

AspectOphthalmologistOptometrist
Required CredentialsMedical degree, ophthalmology residency, medical licenseDoctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state license
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, private practices, surgical centersOptometry clinics, retail optical stores, private practices
Industry UsageMedical and surgical eye careVision testing, eye exams, corrective lenses
Common Search & ComparisonHigher pay, surgical procedures, medical trainingLower pay, routine eye exams, vision correction

Ophthalmologists typically earn higher pay than optometrists due to their extensive medical training, ability to perform surgeries, and work in more complex medical environments. While both roles focus on eye health, ophthalmologists are medical doctors with specialized surgical skills, leading to increased compensation compared to optometrists who primarily provide vision care and eye exams.

Is ophthalmology a stressful job?

Ophthalmologists often experience moderate stress due to the precision required for eye surgeries and patient care. The job typically involves a regular schedule, but high-stakes procedures and patient outcomes can contribute to stress levels.

Where do ophthalmologists make the most money?

Ophthalmologists tend to earn the highest salaries in metropolitan areas with high living costs and large healthcare markets, such as major cities in the United States. Factors like specialization, experience, and practice setting also influence income levels, with those working in private practices or specialized clinics often earning more than those in hospitals or academic institutions.
