What is ophthalmic research?

Ophthalmic research is the scientific study of eye diseases, vision disorders, and the development of new treatments or technologies to improve eye health. Researchers in this field investigate the causes, prevention, and treatment of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. This research can involve laboratory studies, clinical trials, and the development of new diagnostic tools or surgical techniques. Ophthalmic research plays a critical role in advancing our understanding of eye health and improving patient outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in ophthalmic research, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in ophthalmic research often encounter challenges such as recruiting and retaining study participants, managing complex data from advanced imaging technologies, and staying updated with rapidly evolving treatment protocols. Overcoming these challenges typically requires strong collaboration with clinical staff, ongoing professional development, and careful project management. Building good relationships with patients, leveraging interdisciplinary teamwork, and utilizing robust data management systems can help ensure research studies run smoothly and yield meaningful results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Ophthalmic Research, and why are they important?

To thrive in Ophthalmic Research, you need a solid background in biomedical sciences, clinical research methodologies, and often an advanced degree such as a PhD or MD. Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R), laboratory techniques, and regulatory compliance systems like IRB protocols is typically required. Critical thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for designing studies, analyzing results, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure rigorous, ethical research that advances knowledge and improves patient outcomes in ophthalmology.

We are seeking a motivated individual with experience in ophthalmic testing and/or clinical research to help us lead studies on myopia at NECO's Children's Vision Lab.ย

The research technician/associate will work closely with the principal investigator and the interdisciplinary team in one or more NIH funded studies. The primary study is PICNIC, a longitudinal study in children that aims to understand the intrinsic mechanisms whereby some children develop myopia. This information will be critical for the design of effective myopia prevention and control treatments. The team involves experts in pediatric optometry, neuroscience, vision science and electrophysiology. We use a variety of clinical and laboratory research methodologies, including psychophysics, aberrometry, gaze-contingent eye-tracking and biometry.ย

The salary for this position is $70,000. ย This is a full-time position funded for a minimum of 1.5 years (funding is available for a minimum of 5 years). Schedule is somewhat flexible and requires regular in person work, some early evenings and occasional Saturdays. The successful candidate will help the team perform the ophthalmic and vision science tests, analyze data, and participate in data dissemination, all in a collaborative environment. ย A successful candidate will be a self-starter who possesses keen attention to detail and an ability to learn complex techniques and protocols quickly. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary.ย
