The roles often overlap but serve distinct functions within industrial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operator trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operator Trainer, you need in-depth technical knowledge of machinery or equipment, relevant industry experience, and often a recognized certification in training or safety. Familiarity with training management systems, simulation software, and standard operating procedures is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse learners are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure effective knowledge transfer, operational safety, and compliance with industry standards.

What is an operator trainer?

Operator Trainers are professionals responsible for instructing and guiding equipment operators, such as those working with heavy machinery, manufacturing equipment, or industrial systems. Their role involves developing training programs, conducting hands-on sessions, and ensuring operators understand safety protocols and operational procedures. Operator Trainers play a crucial part in maintaining workplace safety, improving efficiency, and reducing the risk of equipment-related accidents. They often assess operator performance and provide feedback to help staff reach required competency levels.

What are some common challenges operator trainers face when onboarding new operators, and how can they be addressed?

Operator Trainers often encounter challenges such as varying learning paces among trainees, language barriers, and adapting training materials to different experience levels. Addressing these involves using a combination of hands-on demonstrations, visual aids, and clear documentation. It’s also helpful to foster an open environment for questions and feedback, ensuring each trainee receives the support needed to safely and effectively operate equipment. Regular assessments and mentorship can further reinforce learning and promote confidence among new operators.

Job Category: Manufacturing & Production

Compensation Range: Starting at $19.00 per hour, based on experience

Job Type: Full-Time

About the Opportunity

This is an opportunity for someone with machine-operating, machining, grinding, or precision-manufacturing experience to learn a specialized trade. Direct camshaft or crankshaft grinding experience is not required. If you are mechanically inclined, comfortable working with precise measurements, and willing to learn, you can be trained on the equipment and process.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn to set up and operate specialized grinding equipment used to produce camshafts, crankshafts, and related engine components.
  • Load parts and help select, install, and adjust grinding wheels, fixtures, and tooling.
  • Measure parts throughout production using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gauges, and other precision instruments.
  • Follow blueprints, work orders, and specifications to produce parts within required tolerances.
  • Monitor machine performance and make adjustments to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Perform routine machine care, wheel dressing, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Complete occasional hand grinding and shaping of engine components.
  • Inspect finished parts and report quality concerns, damaged tooling, or equipment problems.
  • Follow all PPE, lockout/tagout, housekeeping, and shop-safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and productive work area.

What You Bring

  • Hands-on familiarity with micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gauges, or similar precision measuring tools is required.
  • Experience operating manufacturing equipment, CNC machinery, grinders, or other production machinery is preferred.
  • Basic ability to follow blueprints, measurements, work instructions, or dimensional specifications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and willingness to learn a specialized process.
  • Reliable attendance and the ability to work independently while supporting the production team.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 40–50 pounds as needed, and work around shop noise, coolant, and metalworking fluids.

What’s Offered

  • Starting pay of $19.00 per hour, based on experience.
  • Hands-on training in specialized camshaft and crankshaft grinding.
  • Full-time, stable work in a precision-manufacturing environment.
  • Benefits may include health insurance, paid time off, a 401(k), and additional manufacturing benefits.
  • Required personal protective equipment provided.
