Job description

JOB EXPECTATIONS/DUTIES

  • Daily operational duties include (but are not limited to) manual loading and unloading of tank-cars, tank-trucks, ocean-going vessels, tank-to-tank transfers, and blending operations.
  • Monitor products for quality as required. Manually operate valves on tanks and/or pumps. Opens/closes tank fill line valves prior to and after each delivery on storage tanks, which may involve either manually operated or motorized equipment.
  • Checks above ground tanks for storage capacity by manuallyย gauging and/or reading automated tank level gauging systems.
  • Maintain an inquisitive attitude and ask questions to ensure operational procedures are adhered to; operating risks are minimized; and skill level is developed.
  • Calculates/monitors storage capacity on tankage. Installs or removes man-ways, blind-flanges, portable hoses, pipe, and pumps as required.
  • Consistently provide accurate, legible, and timely input of product transfer activities and reports.
  • Visually inspect tanks, pumping and receiving equipment and loading racks (where applicable) during shift in order to identify any operational problems, completes associated shift documentation for such.
  • Monitors self-loading rack operations, and trains/qualifies drivers to use terminal loading/unloading equipment.
  • Weighs or meters tank-trucks in and out as directed; accurately types and checks meter tickets for products and prepares bill of ladings to ensure driver has correct paperwork upon completion.
  • Performs troubleshooting of loading racks, pumps, and motors.
  • Provide timely and consistent communication/notification to management of equipment abnormalities or failures, operating inconsistencies, errors and/or product quality issues.
  • Performs duties such as painting of piping, tanks, and buildings with hand equipment; weed control and landscaping functions; housekeeping activities.
  • Consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
  • As requested by management, participate in special projects and other assignments.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass and maintain all applicable Operator Qualification requirements.
  • Advancement from one step level to the next is based on minimum time requirements, as well as meeting and maintaining satisfactory job performance standards.
    • Operatorย Level 1ย -ย entry level no prior experience - Works under close supervision; must learn the basics and pass required Operator Qualifications within acceptable time frame, as determined by terminal management. required to stand, walk, climb, etc. for extended periods of time.
    • Operatorย Level 2ย โ€“ Has passed Operator Qualifications and has ability to perform basic job duties without supervision.
    • Operatorย Level 3ย โ€“ at least two years performing satisfactorily at Level 2 or equivalent experience; provides self-direction; has shown continuous improvement in ability to perform duties, troubleshoots problems, demonstrates leadership skills, promotes teamwork, contributes ideas and recommendations for generating and implementing new ideas/procedures/processes and serves as a trainer or mentor for less experienced Operators.
    • Operatorย Level 4ย โ€“ at least three years performing satisfactorily at Level 3 or equivalent experience; has maintained a consistent and high level of performance by meeting or exceeding all job performance standards and expectations; is considered aย โ€˜subject matter expertโ€™ย in regards to the Operator position; has the ability to work independently and use sound judgment, as well as the ability to work in a team and promote cooperation; sets a positive example for all and represents Colonial Terminals in a professional manner at all times.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required โ€”Technical training and/or College a plus experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Working knowledge of piping, valves, and tanks
  • Experience with storage tank operations, including SCADA,ย tank gauging, and loading/unloading equipment
  • Prior experience requiring mechanical aptitude and skill is a plus
  • Experience with light maintenance (mechanical, electric, electronic) is a plus
