Job description

Job Title: Cake Decorator

Department: Bakery/Deli

Reports to: Bakery/Deli Manager

Exempt Status: Non-exempt

Safety Sensitive:


JOB FUNCTION: Assemble and prepare cakes, including decorating with icing, gel, drawings, decorating kits, air brush, edible images, and letterings. Ensure all cakes meet standards of quality and excellence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Prepare and decorate cake products according to customer specifications and all applicable standards and procedures.
2. Properly and safely operator and maintain cake equipment while following all health and safety standards.
3. Always maintain an adequate inventory of decorated cakes including backstock cakes especially during holidays and other peak cake occasions.
4. Always display a properly filled cake cases with a variety of cakes to accommodate all customers.
5. Take and fill customer cake orders in a professional and timely manner.
6. Be pleasant and alert to customer needs.
7. Work as a team member to assure constant and consistent quality, service, cleanliness, and value to each customer.
8. Clean work area, organize and stock needed items.
9. Stock and execute proper rotation of products.
10. Keep cake production area and equipment clean and sanitary throughout shift.
11. Promptly inform department manager of all unusual matters of significance.
12. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.


REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.

2. Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
3. Able to pass drug screen.
4. Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
5. Basic reading and writing ability; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
6. Follow directions concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, product quality standards, order of product/supplies, departments operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
7. Good interpersonal communications.

PREFERRED:


1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior cake decorating experience.

OTHER SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS:

1. Perform the same Tasks of the Job as the Deli Clerk while substituting as part of the work crew or as part of the training program for new employees. (See Deli Clerk Job Description.)
2. Understand designated cases, case cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description/quality, customers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, scale, wrapper, department production equipment, cooler layout, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs. 3. Understand cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts and baler controls.
4. Read forms used in the operation of the bakery/Deli Department.
5. Respond to customer questions and responses.
6. Respond to intercom/phone.
7. Respond to co-workers' questions and comments.
8. Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/cleaning equipment operation.
9. Respond to the sound of box cutter operation.
10. Communicate with customers.
11. Use the intercom/phone system.
12. Communicate with co-workers and managers.
13. Communicate with prospective employees.
14. Read and follow case labels/case strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, numbers and aisle markers, department forms and employment forms.
15. Read and follow equipment and chemical warning labels.
16. Read and follow operational procedures

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that are required by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
1. Move while conducting training and orientation of Deli Department personnel, approximately 25 yards
2. Move to supervise: the receiving of product, movement of product to the floor or storage area, opening/cutting of cases, inspect product quality, sorting of cases/merchandise, building of displays in the aisle and on the case/rack, the allocation of space in deli categories, order merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removal of trash/debris from the department, price marking and signage throughout the store, approximately 25 yards.
3. Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 4 hours in duration.
