Description:

The Field Engineer is a highly technical, field-based role responsible for supporting the installation, commissioning, startup, testing, and operational performance of industrial standby and prime power generation systems.


This role plays a critical part in ensuring generator systems, paralleling switchgear, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and control systems are installed, commissioned, and operating safely, reliably, and in accordance with design specifications.


The Field Engineer works closely with Project Managers, Field Service Technicians, electrical contractors, and customers to deliver high-quality power system installations across Kinsleyโ€™s Northeast service territory.


Installation Review & Field Execution:

  • Review electrical one-lines, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and submittals to ensure proper field execution.
  • Support installation teams in identifying scope gaps, constructability issues, and technical discrepancies.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor installation progress and document deficiencies.

Generator Commissioning & Startup:

  • Develop and execute pre-functional and functional startup checklists.
  • Lead commissioning of:
  • Diesel and natural gas generator systems
  • Paralleling switchgear
  • Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)
  • Load banks and associated controls
  • Document commissioning results and provide turnover packages.

Troubleshooting & Technical Support:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, and control-related issues during startup and post-installation.
  • Support Field Service Technicians with advanced troubleshooting.
  • Analyze generator performance data to identify reliability concerns.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of system failures.

Controls & Integration:

  • Support configuration and testing of:
  • Generator controllers
  • Paralleling logic and synchronization systems
  • Remote monitoring systems
  • Ensure proper integration of generators into facility electrical infrastructure.

Customer Interface & Training:

  • Serve as the technical lead during startup and commissioning.
  • Provide customer training on system operation, emergency procedures, and maintenance requirements.
  • Deliver clear commissioning documentation and test reports.
  • Ensure smooth transition from installation to service support.

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent field experience considered.
  • Experience in industrial generator systems, power distribution, or mission-critical backup power environments.
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Diesel and natural gas generator systems
  • Paralleling switchgear
  • ATS systems
  • Load bank testing
  • Engine controls and protection systems
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 110, OSHA standards.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex power systems in live environments.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills in field settings.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license required.

Minimum of seven (7) or more years of experience in industrial generator service, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul.

Required experience includes:

ยท Diesel and natural gas generator systems

ยท Paralleling switchgear and synchronization

ยท Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)

ยท Load bank testing and performance validation

ยท Engine and generator control systems

Experience performing system startups, commissioning activities, and advanced troubleshooting in mission-critical environments (e.g., hospitals, data centers, utilities, industrial facilities) strongly preferred.

Previous experience leading commissioning efforts, mentoring technicians, or serving as a technical escalation resource is a plus.


Travel & Working Conditions:

  • Significant travel within Kinsleyโ€™s service territory
  • Work performed in hospitals, data centers, industrial facilities, utilities, and construction environments.
  • Exposure to energized electrical systems, mechanical equipment, and outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs and work in physically demanding environments.
