General Purpose

The position is available at levels (I, II, III)

Provide real time and day ahead planning analysis of the PacifiCorp transmission system, focusing on maintaining system reliability in the Extended Day Ahead Market (EDAM).  Implement changes to the CAISO EDAM market solution to ensure system reliability during the operational day with reduced cost impacts to the company.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Real Time Operations Planning Engineer I

  • Conduct engineering analysis using EMS, PowerWorld, and DACA (Day Ahead Contingency Analysis tool) to determine potential reliability issues with the CAISO Market Solution.
  • Coordinate with CAISO Engineers, Market Operators, and PacifiCorp Operators to implement reliability centric changes to the Market Solution.
  • Provide real-time operational support for market solutions errors that result in reliability impacts.
  • Perform system analyses and provides real-time engineering support to ensure reliable operation of the transmission systems.
  • Determine methods and techniques to obtaining results that mitigate wildfire risk and improve system reliability.
  • Review the Reliability Coordinator’s OPA to ensure PacifiCorp’s Transmission system performance for the operational day.
  • As a team, provide 7 day a week support for market solution analysis.

In addition, the responsibilities of the Real Time Operations Planning Engineer II 

  • Provide technical oversight and guidance (mentor) to less experienced engineers and operational teams that support increased system reliability.

In addition, the responsibilities of the Real Time Operations Planning Engineer III 

  • Conduct moderately complex engineering analysis using EMS, PowerWorld, various OPA’s, and DACA (Day Ahead Contingency Analysis tool) to determine potential reliability issues with the CAISO Market Solution.
  • Provide day ahead and real-time operational support for market solutions errors that could result in reliability impacts.
  • Author and/or review operating policies and procedures to ensure system reliability during market operations.
  • Assist with base case review and development for operator training (Market, Transmission, etc.)
Requirements

The Requirements of the Real Time Operations Planning Engineer I

  •  Bachelor’s degree in engineering. 
  • Teamwork skills that support solutions to real-time operational issues. 
  • Ability to perform effectively in a high-stress real-time control center operational environment while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • 7 day a week availability to support system operational requirements.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.

In addition, the Requirements of the Real Time Operations Planning Engineer II

  • A minimum of 2 years of utility experience in transmission, substation, or distribution operations or a combination thereof
  • Experience in electric utility operations and Energy Imbalance markets. Planning Operations experience preferred.
  • Understanding of the electric utility business and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance reliability standards, transmission planning standards, and industry practices.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of utility experience in transmission, substation, or distribution operations or a combination thereof.
