ABOUT THIS ROLE

As an Operations Manager in Training (MIT), you will prepare for a future leadership role within our operations team. Through hands-on training and structured development, you will learn the operational best practices of Canteen while gaining exposure to branch operations, logistics, route execution, inventory management, warehouse operations, safety, finance, employee relations, hiring, training, payroll, profit and loss management, and more.

As an MIT, you will be assigned to a training location to complete the on-site, hands-on portion of your onboarding and leadership development experience while participating in Compass Group's Accelerated Manager Program (AMP). Throughout the program, you will work closely with operational leaders, gain experience managing people and processes, and develop the skills necessary to drive operational excellence and exceptional client service.

The Operations Manager in Training role is designed as a career-launching opportunity for individuals interested in growing into future leadership positions within Canteen's operations organization.

During the program, you will:

  • Learn the day-to-day responsibilities of an Operations Service Manager (OSM), including overseeing drivers, service execution, stocking activities, and route performance
  • Spend the majority of your time in the field supporting frontline operations, associates, and customer locations
  • Gain hands-on experience leading teams, setting expectations, coaching employees, and holding team members accountable for performance standards
  • Develop strong peer-to-peer relationships across operations and support functions to drive collaboration and business results
  • Proactively identify and address operational challenges before they become larger issues
  • Learn and apply operational best practices that improve service quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction
  • Support inventory management, product availability, merchandising, and pantry replenishment activities
  • Assist with staffing, scheduling, training, employee engagement, and performance management initiatives
  • Participate in safety programs and support compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Analyze operational metrics and key performance indicators to identify improvement opportunities
  • Build strong client relationships by delivering high levels of service and understanding the value of the customer experience
  • Develop financial acumen through exposure to budgeting, labor management, and profit and loss accountability

YOU MAY HAVE

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, Logistics, Hospitality, or a related field
  • 0-5 years of experience in operations, logistics, distribution, warehouse management, hospitality, customer service, food service, retail, military leadership, or a related internship; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong customer service mindset with an understanding of the importance of client relationships and service excellence
  • Hospitality or logistics experience preferred
  • Interest in pursuing a long-term career in operations leadership and people management
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to motivate and influence others
  • Demonstrated ability to establish expectations, hold team members accountable, and lead by example
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate issues and implement solutions proactively
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented, union environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications with the ability to learn new technology and business systems quickly
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly operational, hands-on role, spending approximately 75% of time in the field and 25% performing administrative and analytical functions
  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to support various operational schedules and business needs
  • Valid driver's license required/preferred; company vehicle may be provided for business use
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends
