Operations Manager

Position Purpose

The Operations Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the daily operational functions of Facing Hunger Food Bank to ensure efficient, safe, and effective warehouse, fleet, facilities, and administrative operations. This position provides leadership to operational staff, establishes priorities, improves processes, and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and organizational policies.

The Operations Manager works collaboratively with Human Resources, Development, Programs, Finance, and Executive Leadership to support organizational goals while ensuring day-to-day operations run efficiently and consistently. All responsibilities shall be consistent with Facing Hunger Food Bank's mission to lead the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the food bank.
  • Establish operational priorities and ensure daily activities support organizational objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational procedures.
  • Improve efficiency through process improvements and workflow management.
  • Ensure operational departments communicate effectively and work collaboratively.
  • Resolve operational issues while maintaining excellent customer service to agencies, donors, volunteers, clients, and community partners.
  • Recommend operational improvements to the CEO.

Leadership

Provide leadership, coaching, accountability, and support to the Administrative Team, Warehouse Director, Fleet Lead, HD Lead and other operational staff as assigned.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hiring recommendations in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Training and onboarding.
  • Performance management and coaching.
  • Scheduling and workload management.
  • Employee development.
  • Corrective action in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Promoting teamwork, accountability, and a positive workplace culture.

Warehouse & Distribution Operations

  • Provide oversight and support to the Warehouse Director to ensure efficient warehouse operations.
  • Monitor receiving, storage, inventory control, order fulfillment, and food distribution activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Feeding America, FDA, USDA, AIB, and all applicable food safety standards.
  • Monitor inventory accuracy and minimize product loss.
  • Ensure warehouse operations remain safe, organized, and efficient.

Fleet & Transportation

  • Provide oversight and support to the Fleet Lead and HD Lead.
  • Ensure fleet readiness, preventive maintenance, inspections, licensing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor transportation schedules, routes, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational vehicle policies and DOT requirements.

Administrative Operations

  • Supervise administrative support staff.
  • Ensure efficient office operations and administrative workflows.
  • Coordinate operational purchasing and supply management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve administrative efficiency and customer service.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a culture of workplace safety.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Feeding America, FDA, USDA, AIB, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in incident investigations and corrective action planning.
  • Ensure required operational training is completed.
  • Monitor compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

Cross-Department Collaboration

Work collaboratively with:

  • Human Resources regarding staffing, employee relations, performance management, policy implementation, and safety.
  • Development regarding food drives, donor activities, volunteer events, and warehouse logistics.
  • Programs regarding food distributions, agency services, home delivery operations, and scheduling.
  • Finance regarding purchasing, budgeting, inventory reconciliation, and operational expenditures.

Emergency Response

  • Coordinate operational response during weather emergencies, disaster relief efforts, and emergency food distributions.
  • Help ensure operational continuity during emergencies and unexpected events.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible operations or logistics management experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing multiple departments or operational functions.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other business software applications.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred

  • Experience in nonprofit operations, food banking, warehouse management, or logistics.
  • Knowledge of Feeding America standards.
  • DOT transportation knowledge.
  • OSHA or workplace safety certifications.
  • Forklift certification.

Work Environment

This position works in both office and warehouse environments. Warehouse temperatures may fluctuate seasonally. Occasional evening, weekend, or emergency response work may be required.
