Job description

Location: Monessen, PA
Cleveland-Cliffs LLC has an immediate opportunity for a Shift Manager of Operations at the Monessen, PA location. The Shift Manager Operations is responsible for managing a shift crew to meet the required production and quality goals. The individual must be self-motivated/self-directed and demonstrate the ability to lead a complex workforce and be capable of working in extreme environmental conditions in a multi-tiered production facility.
Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Directly manages a crew of hourly represented employees, with indirect supervisory responsibilities over Shift Maintenance personnel while facilitating a safe and productive work environment.
  • Troubleshoots and investigates operational issues.
  • Planning and establishing work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals.
  • Addresses issues that may impact production or system reliability.
  • Strives to improve reliability across Coke Plant Operations to decrease cost, improve production, and help meet customer needs.
  • Provides tools and other resources necessary to the crew being supervised to ensure safe, smooth, and efficient operations.
  • Writes periodic status reports and presents updates to peers, other departments, and management.
  • Demonstrates equipment operations and assignments to new employees or assigning employees to experienced workers for training.
  • Supports continuous improvement activities, works with outside contractors/vendors, and communicates key performance measures.
  • Maintains compliance with all corporate and plant Safety, Health, and Environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Promptly and properly reports all incidents, injuries, damages, spills and/or releases.
  • Maintaining an active housekeeping program to ensure a safe, clean, and productive facility.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • General computer knowledge.
  • Must be able to work overtime and a rotating shift that shall include weekends and holidays.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills are necessary.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization, prioritization, time-management, and decision making.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • This position is a combination of work in office and industrial settings.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protection equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, hearing protection, respirators, fall protection harnesses, and other PPE as required.
  • Duties require extensive manual dexterity in usage of computer terminal and keyboard, while sitting for long periods of time preparing budgets, work scopes, outage schedules, and other reports as needed.
  • May be required to perform work involving heights, kneeling, bending, walking over uneven surfaces (i.e. loose gravel), open grating and up and down staircases.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold, and around hazardous chemicals.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working experience in a coke manufacturing setting.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and directing union personnel.
  • Previous supervisory experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
