Job description

Consider joining Metal Exchange as the site Operations Manager in our Moulton, AL location. The Operations Manager is responsible for the full operational, safety, and personnel management of our scrap metal facility in Moulton, Alabama. This leader oversees all yard, warehouse, and office activities, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations while driving continuous improvement, strong team performance, and exceptional customer service.

This role requires a hands-on, decisive leader with experience in scrap yard operations, logistics, manufacturing, or industrial environments. The ideal candidate brings strong operational discipline, a commitment to safety, and the ability to coach and develop a high-performing team.

This is an on-site position located in Moulton, AL.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership & Facility Management

  • Oversees all day-to-day operations across the yard, warehouse, and office.
  • Ensures materials are received, sorted, processed, stored, and shipped safely and efficiently.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of scrap materials, including classification, grading, weighing, and documentation.
  • Monitors and improves operational processes to enhance throughput, reduce waste, and optimize material flow.
  • Ensures proper use, maintenance, and availability of equipment including forklifts, cranes, and heavy machinery.
  • Tracks and understand all inbound and outbound shipments, ensuring accuracy and timely communication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Enforces all safety policies and procedures; ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts regular safety inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
  • Leads safety training for all yard, warehouse, and office personnel.
  • Manages risk across operations, including physical position management and facility maintenance.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Leads, motivates, and develops staff across yard, warehouse, and office functions.
  • Oversees scheduling, staffing, performance management, and training.
  • Coaches team members and frontline leaders to build capability and ensure accountability.
  • Fosters a culture aligned with company values: Safety, Integrity, Caring, and Growth.

Logistics, Dispatching & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinates with logistics teams and transportation partners for inbound and outbound shipments.
  • Manages outside quotes, bids, and vendor relationships for materials and services.
  • Ensures timely preparation of materials for shipment and customer orders.

Customer & Supplier Relations

  • Serves as a primary point of contact for customers visiting the yard or sourcing materials.
  • Builds and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and community partners.
  • Ensures a customer-focused, responsive environment.

Financial & Reporting Responsibilities

  • Supports P&L oversight through cost control, productivity improvements, and operational efficiency.
  • Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly reports on inventory, shipments, safety, and staff performance.
  • Updates and presents spreadsheets and operational metrics to leadership.

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Education

  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in operations, engineering, or business preferred

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in scrap yard, manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial operations, including leadership responsibility

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of scrap materials, recycling processes, and industry regulations
  • Proven experience leading teams and developing talent
  • Demonstrated ability to manage scrap yard financial operations and deliver accurate, data-driven performance metrics
  • Knowledge of safety standards in industrial environments
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Word) and with inventory management systems
  • Ability to operate and train others on heavy equipment and forklifts
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and assessment
  • Must be authorized to work in the US, visa sponsorships are not available
  • Must have regular attendance and work on-site in our Moulton, AL location
