Job description

Accounting Controller – Remote

Shipping / Logistics Industry
Full-Time or Part-Time Available
Salary: $45,000–$70,000 annually, based on experience
Remote Position | Benefits & Computer Equipment Provided

Position Overview

We are a growing small business in the shipping and logistics industry seeking an experienced, hands-on Accounting Controller to help oversee and strengthen the financial side of our organization.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a smaller, entrepreneurial environment where their experience, ideas, and recommendations can make a meaningful impact. We are looking for someone who can not only manage day-to-day accounting responsibilities, but also analyze our financial processes, identify gaps or inefficiencies, and help us create better systems as we continue to grow.

The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, dependable, and personable. We want someone who enjoys working collaboratively with ownership, sales, operations, and accounting teams while also being comfortable taking ownership of their responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and review sales representative and management commission calculations and payments
  • Reconcile commissions against company financial and operational reporting
  • Review financial statements and operating results to identify discrepancies, gaps, unusual expenses, or opportunities for improvement
  • Reconcile company expenses, credit cards, reimbursements, and other financial transactions
  • Review and manage employee and sales representative expense reports
  • Track company incentive programs, including qualification and financial tracking for incentive trips
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow review, and financial reporting
  • Help establish financial controls and processes appropriate for a growing small business
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for accounting and financial processes
  • Identify opportunities to automate, streamline, and improve financial workflows
  • Work closely with ownership and management to provide financial insight and reporting
  • Coordinate with outside accountants, payroll providers, tax professionals, or other financial partners as needed
  • Assist with limited HR-related administrative responsibilities when necessary
  • Help ensure financial records are accurate, organized, and completed on schedule

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience in accounting, controllership, financial management, or a similar senior accounting role
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, reconciliations, commissions, expense management, and internal controls
  • Experience working with or supporting a small or growing business is strongly preferred
  • Ability to take experience and best practices from previous roles and adapt them to a smaller, entrepreneurial organization
  • Strong Excel and spreadsheet skills
  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks Online or similar platforms preferred
  • Comfortable learning new systems and helping integrate technology into accounting processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Friendly, approachable, and comfortable working with employees across different departments
  • High level of discretion when handling confidential financial and employee information

The Right Personality for This Role

We are looking for more than someone who simply processes transactions. We want someone who will become a trusted financial resource for the company.

The right person will be:

  • Hands-on – willing to handle both higher-level financial analysis and day-to-day accounting responsibilities
  • Proactive – identifies problems and recommends solutions before they become larger issues
  • Process-minded – enjoys creating structure, documentation, and SOPs
  • Analytical – looks beyond the numbers to understand what they mean for the business
  • Collaborative – enjoys working with ownership, sales, operations, and other team members
  • Personable – professional and friendly, with a willingness to help others understand financial processes
  • Entrepreneurial – comfortable working in an environment where processes continue to evolve as the company grows

Remote Work Requirements

This is a fully remote position. Candidates must have:

  • A dedicated and quiet home workspace
  • Reliable high-speed internet
  • The ability to work independently and remain accessible during agreed-upon business hours
  • Strong communication and time-management skills

Company computer equipment will be provided.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $45,000–$70,000 annually, depending on experience and whether the position is structured as full-time or part-time
  • Full-time or part-time scheduling options available
  • Benefits available
  • Company-provided computer equipment
  • Fully remote work environment
  • Opportunity to play an important role in improving and building the financial infrastructure of a growing business

Why Join Us?

This role offers the opportunity to have a significant impact rather than simply becoming another person within a large accounting department.

You will have the ability to bring your experience and ideas to the table, improve how we manage our financial operations, create processes that make the company more efficient, and work directly with company leadership.
