Job description

NOTE: This is a hybrid position. The Accounting Manager will work primarily remotely but must be available to work from Primo Designs’ Springfield, Illinois, office a few times per month

Salary: $95,000–$115,000 annually, depending on experience

Accounting Manager/Controller

Job Post Intro

Does the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and help an established small business reach its next stage of growth excite you?

Would you thrive in a visible, high-impact role where you work directly with company leadership and can see the results of your contributions?

Are you ready to build an accounting function, eventually develop a team, and grow toward a Director of Finance or CFO-level opportunity?

If you are a driven, hands-on accounting professional looking for meaningful responsibility, direct access to leadership, and long-term growth potential, Primo Designs would love to hear from you!

Intro for Company

Founded in Springfield in 1985, Primo Designs began as a one-person screen-printing operation in the basement of the founder’s uncle’s duplex. Today, Primo is an established team that helps healthcare organizations, manufacturers, schools, and other businesses strengthen their brands through custom apparel, promotional products, signage, fulfillment, and company stores.

Primo is entering an exciting new chapter. The company is investing in new markets, stronger systems, automation, and its next generation of leaders—with the goal of doubling its revenue and creating new opportunities for its team.

Primo’s core values guide how the team works:

  • We Are One Team
  • We Are Problem Solvers
  • We Are Competitors
  • We Are Disciplined & Focused
  • We Are Effective Communicators

This is not a position where you will be one small part of a large finance department. You will have direct access to company leadership, the freedom to improve processes, and the opportunity to see the results of your work across the entire organization. This hybrid opportunity offers the flexibility to work primarily remotely while maintaining meaningful face-to-face collaboration with Primo’s leadership team. The Accounting Manager will typically visit the Springfield office a few times per month based on business needs.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Accounting Manager will take ownership of Primo Designs’ accounting and financial reporting functions. Initially, this will be a highly hands-on role responsible for maintaining accurate books, managing cash flow, completing timely closes, and providing leadership with clear financial information.

As Primo grows, this individual will improve systems and controls, build the accounting function, and eventually develop and lead a supporting team. The Accounting Manager will report day-to-day to the General Manager while maintaining direct access to the owner and founder.

Essential Functions

  • Own the full accounting cycle, including general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll entries, inventory, cost of goods sold, and job costing.
  • Lead accurate and timely weekly and monthly closing processes.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, including the income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow reporting.
  • Maintain short- and long-term cash forecasts to support operational and strategic decisions.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and working capital.
  • Develop budgets, forecasts, variance analyses, and meaningful KPI reporting.
  • Ensure that data flows accurately between ShopWorks and QuickBooks Online.
  • Strengthen accounting policies, standard operating procedures, documentation, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows through technology, dashboards, integration, and automation.
  • Partner with company leadership to translate financial results into understandable, actionable business insights.
  • Coordinate with the company’s external CPA on tax filings, year-end reporting, and compliance matters.
  • Maintain organized records for CPA reviews, lender requests, and potential future audits.
  • Support banking and lender relationships, including required financial reporting.
  • Help build and lead the accounting team as the company continues to grow.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of hands-on accounting experience, including at least two years in a senior or management-level role.
  • Strong full-cycle accounting experience, including AR, AP, GL, reconciliations, financial reporting, cash management, and month-end close.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Small or midsized business experience required; manufacturing, inventory, COGS, or job-costing experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Compensation

  • Base salary of $95,000–$115,000 annually, depending on experience.
  • Employer contribution covering 50% of the employee’s health-insurance premium.
  • Dependent health coverage available at the employee’s expense.
  • Simple IRA with a 3% employer match.
  • Ten paid holidays.
  • Two weeks of paid vacation.
  • Hybrid flexibility, with remote work and scheduled visits to the Springfield office a few times per month.
  • Meaningful opportunity to build a team and grow toward Director of Finance or CFO-level responsibility.
