St. Vincent’s Medical Center, located in Bridgeport, employs more than 3,200 individuals. It features a 473-bed community teaching hospital, a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, a large multispecialty provider group, and specialized services for both adults and children. St. Vincent’s was the first hospital in Fairfield County to join our network and is the second-largest facility within the system.

Position Overview

  • Delivers direct nursing care following the established policies, procedures, and protocols of the organization.
  • Ensures patient safety during surgical and other invasive procedures by utilizing evidence-based practices as the RN Circulator.
  • Supports the surgical team in maintaining a high standard of sterility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exhibits the necessary knowledge and skills to assess patients, identifying their physical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and age-related needs to provide tailored care.
  • Reviews patient charts for completeness in line with documentation protocols before and after surgical procedures.
  • Complies with all applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Engages in communication with patients, colleagues, and physicians to ensure seamless continuity of care.
  • Evaluates patients prior to surgery (e.g., NPO status) and addresses their concerns.
  • Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures (including supplies, implants, instruments, and equipment).
  • Checks equipment and resolves issues as necessary.
  • Takes responsibility for maintaining the operating room's sterility.
  • Positions and prepares patients on the operating table.
  • Monitors patients' vital signs to identify any irregularities.
  • Follows safety standards and precautions diligently.
  • Passes medical instruments or other items to the surgeon during procedures when scrubbed in.

Qualifications
  • Must possess a Registered Nurse license from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, obtained prior to the hire or transfer date.
  • An Associate degree is required; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Must be a certified BLS Provider from the American Heart Association, obtained within 60 days of hire or transfer date.
  • At least 2 years of experience as an Operating Room Nurse is required (scrub experience is a plus but not mandatory).
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques is essential.
  • Solid understanding of patient safety protocols and precautions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems effectively.
