Responsibilities
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Project Engineer assists the Project Manager and Superintendent with respect to safety, quality, planning and production, finance, and record keeping on heavy civil infrastructure and transportation construction projects consisting of highway, road, bridge, civil and site work. The Project Engineer may work in conjunction with other Project Engineers on the same project and may also report to a Senior Project Engineer on some projects. The Project Engineer may assist in on-boarding newer Project Engineers and help in supporting engineer interns. The Project Engineer may support one or more projects concurrently, depending on size and scope of work within an operating region, and may assist the estimating, cost control, and engineering teams occasionally.
RESPONSIBLITES:
Safety
โ€ข Assist in the preparation and presentation of weekly Toolbox Talks and Daily Safety Huddles.
โ€ข Assist with labor force new hire process.
โ€ข Make Miss Utility One Call Center requests and confirm mark-outs have been completed to ensure no utilities are damaged during construction activities.
โ€ข Ensure that SSHASP and Hazardous Communication Program documents are maintained and include all relevant MSDS.
โ€ข Participate and record findings of periodic jobsite safety inspections with safety and other supervisory personnel.
โ€ข Track all incidents and injuries that occur on the project.
Financial
โ€ข Perform monthly review of payment applications with Superintendent and Project Manager.
โ€ข Notify Project Manager of anticipated quantity overruns/underruns.
โ€ข Submit monthly approved payment applications with subcontractor payment sheets to Accounting for processing of Subcontractor payments.
โ€ข Regularly review and approve material and supplier invoices for the project.
โ€ข Assist with cost projections including:
o Quantity takeoffs - quantity completed versus quantity remaining
o Analysis of historic versus projected productions
o Assessment of materials on hand versus remaining needed
โ€ข Initiate set up of Purchase Orders and Subcontracts.
โ€ข Accurately track asphalt and other major materials that are delivered verses the quantity paid.
Planning and Production
โ€ข Assist in the development of project look-ahead schedules.
โ€ข Ensure look ahead schedules comport with approved baseline CPM schedule.
โ€ข Monitor progress of work against approved baseline CPM schedule and maintain contemporaneous records for use in monthly schedule updates.
โ€ข Perform daily pay item and production tracking quantity review with Superintendent and Job Foremen.
โ€ข Work with Superintendent to enter daily quantities into HeavyJob and file daily sheets.
โ€ข Assist in purchase of job materials to ensure the proper quantities are delivered.
โ€ข Track job codes using Phase Code System.
โ€ข Participate in problem solving and value engineering proposals.
โ€ข Review of project documents and preparation of RFIs (Requests for Information) to resolve conflicts, errors, or ambiguities in the contract documents.
โ€ข Prepare work packages for each major facet of work for field use, including:
o Relevant portions of plans and specs
o Approved shop drawings and technical data sheets
o Associated pay items, quantities and phase codes
o SDS sheets
o Miss Utility tickets (one-call for excavations)
o As-built or record drawings
o Schedule or sequencing information
โ€ข Attend and participate in meetings with Owner, Project Partners, and other stakeholders
Quality Control
โ€ข Review of technical data and shop drawing submittals for conformance with the project documents.
โ€ข Perform documentation of field conditions and progress of work for conformity with the project documents and work packages.
โ€ข Make inspections and record erosion and sedimentation control observations in SWPPP.
Record Keeping
โ€ข Assist superintendent with daily payroll information by specific task and in productivity tracking.
โ€ข Track all subcontractors that worked on the project for the month utilizing the Subcontractor Daily Log.
โ€ข Assist Superintendent and Project Manager to maintain job records, including daily journals, submittals, RFIs, correspondence, shop drawings, progress photos, meeting minutes, SWPPP, SSHASP, material delivery log, quantity and pay item tracking, Miss Utility tickets, inspection and punch list log, issues and changed conditions logs, change order log, equipment log, and all other pertinent documents.
โ€ข Maintain a file, tracking all extra work.
โ€ข Develop and update Submittal Log.
โ€ข Collect as-built records and maintain official version for submission at project completion.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
โ€ข B.S. Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Construction Engineering, or 4-Year Degree in Construction or Environmental Management with 2 to 3 years of related experience.
โ€ข Experience in Heavy Civil Construction (highways, roads, bridges, structures, support of excavation, cast-in-place and pile foundations, underground utility systems, site work, and environmental; wastewater treatment plants a plus).
โ€ข Capable of meeting deadlines, self-motivated, detail oriented, highly organized, excellent follow-through capability.
โ€ข Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential to this position.
โ€ข Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment and accurately process documents and perform duties in a timely manner.
โ€ข Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe / Bluebeam, Primavera P6, AutoCAD, Viewpoint, HeavyBid, and HeavyJob a plus.
โ€ข Valid Driver's License
โ€ข Able to obtain TWIC, DBIDs, or other similar credentials for access to restricted or government sites.
Reports to: Project Manager or Senior Project Engineer
Business Unit: Mid-Atlantic Region
Location: Richmond, VA
Travel Requirements: Works within an operating region that may require one-way travel distances of up to 100 miles. Occasional overnight travel to other regional offices may be required.
