What is the difference between Openvino vs Computer Vision Engineer?

AspectOpenvinoComputer Vision Engineer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of AI frameworks, hardware optimization, programming skillsDegree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; experience in AI and image processing
Work EnvironmentTech companies, AI development labs, hardware manufacturersResearch institutions, tech firms, startups, or industry-specific companies
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily used in AI inference optimization, embedded systems, and hardware accelerationDeveloping and implementing computer vision algorithms for applications like surveillance, robotics, and autonomous vehicles

Openvino focuses on optimizing AI inference workloads and hardware acceleration, often requiring knowledge of AI frameworks and hardware. In contrast, a Computer Vision Engineer designs and develops vision algorithms, working across various industries. While both roles involve AI and image processing, Openvino is more specialized in deployment and optimization, whereas Computer Vision Engineers focus on algorithm development and application.

What is OpenVINO?

OpenVINO (Open Visual Inference and Neural Network Optimization) is a free toolkit developed by Intel to help developers optimize and deploy AI inference, particularly deep learning models, across Intel hardware such as CPUs, GPUs, VPUs, and FPGAs. It is mainly used for accelerating computer vision applications like image classification, object detection, and facial recognition. OpenVINO streamlines the process of converting and optimizing models from popular frameworks, making them faster and more efficient for edge and cloud deployments.

What challenges do professionals face when deploying AI models to edge devices using OpenVINO?

Professionals working with OpenVINO often encounter challenges related to optimizing and converting AI models to ensure they run efficiently on diverse edge hardware. These challenges include ensuring compatibility with various device architectures, minimizing inference latency, and handling limitations in memory and compute resources. Additionally, troubleshooting model conversion errors and maintaining accuracy during optimization are frequent tasks. Collaboration with hardware engineers and software developers is also essential to address performance bottlenecks and integrate solutions smoothly into production environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work with OpenVINO?

To thrive as an OpenVINO Developer, you need a solid background in computer vision, deep learning, and proficiency in Python or C++, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with the OpenVINO toolkit, neural network optimization, and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate and innovate in deploying AI solutions. These skills ensure optimized AI performance on edge devices and successful integration of machine learning models into production environments.

Staff Software Engineer - Edge Mapping

Hivemapper

San Francisco, CA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 22 days ago

Job description

Hivemapper is a decentralized global map data network built by 10s of thousands of mapping devices. High-res sensors like RGB, Stereo Depth, GNSS, IMU, etc. feed sensor fusion and ML models at the edge. Data is automatically uploaded in near realtime over LTE or WiFi. Enterprise tech, mapping, auto, robotaxis, rideshare, and entertainment represent some of the customers consuming data today.ย

APIs allow anyone to consume precisely extracted Map Features, HD map data, high-res street-level imagery, construction, and driving events for AV simulation. Tech-savvy customers develop and deploy software directly to our dashcams to get realtime data for things like change detection or visual semantic data mining. AI Fleet management tools drive value to large fleets of vehicles.ย

Edge Mappingย

In 2023, we launched our GPU powered 3D reconstruction pipeline to accurately identify and extract map features from imagery and sensor data. As we continued to scale this pipeline globally, we realized that moving as much of this processing as possible to actual hardware would not only speed up processing and vaporize costs, it could also result in vastly superior data quality.ย

We began shipping our Bee device in January 2025, equipped with high resolution global shutter stereo depth, 4K RGB imagery, cutting edge GNSS/IMU performance, hardware acceleration for ML, and a high speed LTE modem.ย

We are looking for engineers with experience across sensor-based mapping stacks and mapping systems to help us accelerate our continuous migration and evolution for more and more ML, sensor fusion, and HD map data processing on our devices.ย
Responsbilities
  • Evolve and architect efficient userspace software systems dealing with rich, high frequency data in realtimeย
  • Build high-level C++, Python, and TypeScript embedded applications and sensor fusion pipelines, and computer vision systems.ย
  • Use a data-driven approach to iterating quickly with near-realtime performance monitoring across 10s of thousands of devices worldwideย
  • Write high quality software that takes advantage of hardware paths when possible
  • Optimize ML vision models to run on our hardware efficiently.
Qualifications
  • Experience with embedded sensor solutions
  • Solid understanding of map data sensor platformsย - RGB, global shutter stereo depth, GNSS, IMUs, etc.
  • Hands-on Linux OS development experience for embedded systems (we use Yocto)
  • Proficiency in C or C++ and at least one of Python, Typescript, Node.JS, OpenVINO, or Go
What We Offer
  • Medical, dental and vision benefits plus FSA
  • Family leave
  • 401(k) program
  • Unlimited Flex PTO
  • Commuter benefits
  • Paid lunch
Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Hivemapper, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
