What does an OpenStack Solution Architect do?

An OpenStack Solution Architect is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing cloud infrastructure solutions based on the OpenStack platform. They work closely with clients or internal teams to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable, secure, and efficient cloud architectures. Their role also involves selecting appropriate OpenStack components, integrating third-party tools, and ensuring that deployments follow best practices for reliability and performance. Additionally, they may provide guidance during migration projects and ongoing support for cloud environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OpenStack Solution Architect?

To thrive as an Openstack Solution Architect, you need deep expertise in cloud computing, Linux systems, networking, and experience with OpenStack deployments, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like Certified OpenStack Administrator (COA). Familiarity with tools such as Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud management platforms is typically necessary. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams help individuals excel in this role. These skills ensure robust, scalable cloud solutions that align with organizational goals and support seamless cloud adoption.

What are some common challenges OpenStack Solution Architects face when integrating OpenStack with existing enterprise infrastructure?

Openstack Solution Architects often encounter challenges related to compatibility with legacy systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing networking, storage, and identity management solutions. They must address concerns around security, scalability, and high availability, especially in complex enterprise environments. Additionally, navigating organizational resistance to change and aligning Openstack deployments with business objectives requires strong communication and stakeholder management skills. Collaborating closely with IT, security, and operations teams is essential to ensure successful adoption and long-term support.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer - OpenStack based in Netherlands.

Join a globally distributed engineering team building open-source technologies that power modern cloud infrastructure. In this role, you'll develop and maintain software for OpenStack and Ceph, helping bring scalable cloud platforms to diverse computing environments. You'll work primarily with Python while tackling challenges across infrastructure automation, distributed systems, and software-defined data centers. Your contributions will support deployments ranging from individual machines to large-scale bare-metal environments. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers across countries and cultures, contributing to both code and technical decision-making. The role offers significant opportunities to work with open-source technologies while continuously developing your engineering expertise.

Accountabilities
  • Develop high-quality software and new features for OpenStack and Ceph deployment and management.
  • Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed engineering team to design effective technical solutions.
  • Debug complex technical issues, investigate root causes, and implement reliable fixes.
  • Review code from other engineers and contribute constructive feedback to maintain high engineering standards.
  • Help ensure OpenStack and Ceph operate successfully across multiple hardware architectures and computing environments.
  • Contribute to infrastructure automation and infrastructure-as-code solutions using Python and related technologies.
  • Participate in technical discussions, architecture decisions, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Work remotely while participating in international travel several times per year for internal and external events.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, STEM, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Python.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in at least two relevant technologies or domains, such as Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, AI/ML, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Go, C, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Debian packaging, or scalable web services.
  • Experience working with OpenStack, OVN, Open vSwitch, or related cloud and infrastructure technologies.
  • Experience with non-x86 architectures such as ARM64, s390, Power, or other architectures is highly valuable.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, debugging, code review, and collaborative development.
  • Passion for open-source software, Linux, distributed systems, and the evolution of software-defined data centers.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a globally distributed organization.
  • Self-motivated, curious, flexible, accountable, and comfortable taking ownership of technical challenges.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally approximately two to four times per year, typically for one to two weeks at a time.
Benefits:
  • Flexible, remote-first working environment.
  • Learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Annual compensation review.
  • Recognition and rewards programs.
  • Annual leave.
  • Priority Pass travel benefits.
  • Opportunity to work with open-source technologies used across cloud, AI, IoT, and enterprise environments.
  • Collaboration with a globally distributed team of experienced engineers.
  • Regular international team events, typically held two to four times per year in different locations.
  • Inclusive working environment committed to equal employment opportunities and valuing diverse experiences and perspectives.
  • Reasonable accommodations available for candidates who require support during the interview or travel process.
