How much do online vet tech jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for online vet tech in the United States is $21.70, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.79 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an online vet tech?

An online vet tech is a veterinary technician who provides support, education, and guidance to pet owners through digital platforms rather than in-person visits. These professionals assist with basic pet care questions, help interpret lab results, and offer advice on non-emergency situations, but they do not diagnose conditions or prescribe medications. Online vet techs work alongside veterinarians to enhance client communication and improve animal welfare remotely. Their services are especially useful for routine queries, follow-ups, and telehealth consultations.

How does an online vet tech typically collaborate with veterinarians and pet owners in a remote environment?

As an Online Vet Tech, you will use digital platforms to communicate with veterinarians, assist with virtual consultations, and educate pet owners about animal care. You may be responsible for gathering patient histories, triaging cases, and relaying important updates between clients and the veterinary team. This role requires strong communication skills and adaptability since you’ll often coordinate care across different time zones and use various telehealth tools. Successful Online Vet Techs are proactive about staying connected and ensuring all parties are informed throughout the care process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online vet tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Vet Tech, you need a solid background in veterinary technology, animal care, and a degree or certification as a veterinary technician. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic medical records (EMRs), and diagnostic software is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and empathy are vital soft skills for effectively assisting pet owners remotely. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing accurate, compassionate care and ensuring smooth virtual interactions with clients and veterinary teams.

What is the difference between Online Vet Tech vs Veterinary Assistant?

AspectOnline Vet TechVeterinary Assistant
CredentialsCertified Vet Tech (CVT) or Licensed Vet Tech (LVT)High school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentRemote, online support, telehealth consultationsAnimal clinics, hospitals, shelters, on-site
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with diagnostics, client communication, record-keeping, remote patient monitoringAnimal care, feeding, cleaning, basic medical tasks
Industry UsageVeterinary clinics, telehealth services, online platformsPhysical veterinary practices, animal care facilities

The Online Vet Tech role typically requires certification and involves remote support tasks, while Veterinary Assistants work on-site providing basic animal care. Both roles are essential in veterinary services but differ mainly in credentials and work environment.

Are there any online vet tech programs?

Yes, there are online vet tech programs that allow students to complete coursework remotely, often combining online classes with hands-on clinical experience. These programs typically prepare students for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and may require in-person lab work or externships. Accreditation by organizations like the AVMA ensures program quality and eligibility for certification.

Is an online vet tech degree worth it?

An online vet tech degree provides the necessary education to become a veterinary technician, including coursework in animal care, medical procedures, and clinical skills. It can be a cost-effective and flexible option, but graduates must also pass a credentialing exam to work in the field, which often requires hands-on clinical experience.
