Online User Testing information

What is online user testing?

Online user testing is a process where individuals test websites, apps, or digital products remotely to provide feedback on usability, functionality, and overall user experience. Testers are given specific tasks and asked to record their thoughts, actions, and any issues they encounter. Companies use this feedback to identify problems, improve design, and ensure products meet user needs before launching to the public.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in online user testing?

A typical day in online user testing involves reviewing test instructions, completing assigned usability tasks on websites or apps, and providing detailed feedback through written responses or recorded videos. Testers often work independently and must manage their own schedules, as opportunities are typically offered on a per-project basis. Collaboration with project managers or test coordinators may occur to clarify requirements, but most communication is handled digitally. Attention to detail and clear, constructive communication skills are essential for providing valuable insights to clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online user tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online User Tester, you need keen observational abilities, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of usability principles, often supported by familiarity with digital devices and web navigation. Experience with usability testing platforms (such as UserTesting or TryMyUI) and the ability to record feedback using screen capture tools are typically required. Strong written communication, critical thinking, and reliability help testers provide clear, actionable feedback and meet tight deadlines. These skills ensure that user experiences are accurately evaluated and meaningful insights are delivered to improve digital products.

What is the difference between Online User Testing vs User Experience (UX) Tester?

AspectOnline User TestingUser Experience (UX) Tester
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials required, but familiarity with testing tools helpsOften requires knowledge of UX principles, usability testing, and sometimes certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote, flexible, often project-basedRemote or on-site, focused on usability and user research
Employer & IndustryMarket research firms, tech companies, startupsDesign agencies, tech companies, consulting firms
Search & Comparison IntentPeople compare online testing platforms and rolesIndividuals interested in UX roles and usability testing careers

Online User Testing involves evaluating websites or apps through testing platforms, often focusing on quick feedback. UX Testers conduct in-depth usability assessments, analyzing user behavior and improving overall user experience. While both roles focus on usability, Online User Testing is more about quick, platform-based feedback, whereas UX Testing involves comprehensive research and design insights.

Are online user testing jobs legit?

Online user testing jobs are generally legitimate opportunities where companies pay individuals to test websites, apps, or products and provide feedback. However, some scams exist, so it is important to research the company, avoid jobs that require upfront payments, and verify reviews before committing to a testing platform.

How do I become an online user tester?

To become an online user tester, you typically need to sign up with testing platforms or websites that connect testers with companies, complete profile assessments, and sometimes pass basic skills or usability tests. Having good communication skills, a reliable internet connection, and a willingness to provide honest feedback are important for success in this role.

Job posting may be removed earlier if the position is filled or if a sufficient number of applications are received.
Cisco Networking is an industry leader providing intelligent network solutions for organizations to securely connect users, devices, applications, and workloads everywhere. We empower organizations everywhere - from local libraries to global hotels, hospitals, manufacturers, and more - to focus on their mission and have technology that simply works.
What We Are Looking For
This role is part of the Cisco Networking platform team, shaping portfolio-wide experiences in recommendations, automation, agentic workflows, predictive insights, and related areas. You will have agency to drive customer outcomes, partner across teams, and align with broader Cisco platform efforts where shared patterns matter. The work spans AI-powered automations, network health, data-rich insights, and other intelligence experiences that help customers understand their networks, decide what to do, and act with confidence.
This is an individual contributor role for a product designer practitioner who has shipped customer-facing AI, ML, automation-heavy, or intelligence experiences and can help define strong AI experience design in practice. The successful candidate will bring strong product and systems thinking, technical fluency, interaction design, visual craft, and data visualization skills. You will partner closely with cross-functional platform teams to shape the customer experience, AI behaviors, workflows, and system logic behind useful, trustworthy, and shippable products.
As UX designers, we consider the full customer journey across products, personas, workflows, and ecosystems. We believe product quality depends on team quality, so we place a high value on thoughtful hiring and the growth and development of everyone on our team.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead design for AI-enabled product experiences across Cisco Networking platforms and products, from discovery through launch and iteration.
  • Turn ambiguous AI opportunities into clear product concepts, flows, prototypes, and shipped experiences.
  • Design AI-first interactions that surface what matters, adapt to context, guide decisions, automate routine work, and keep customers in control.
  • Maintain deep understanding of AI technology, how it works, and how it is evolving.
  • Translate user goals into data models, telemetry requirements, model training needs, and design direction.
  • Partner across Networking to make technical capabilities useful for customers and feasible for teams to adopt.
  • Design adaptive experiences for different personas, behaviors, workflows, and customer needs.
  • Define reusable UX patterns for AI explanations, user control, review, correction, feedback, and advanced workflows across AI, intelligence, agentic, and automation-heavy experiences.
  • Partner with teams testing faster design methods, using AI tools and design thinking to improve collaboration, prototyping, and decision-making.
You're an ideal candidate if you have:
  • A portfolio showing shipped AI-powered, ML-enabled, or data-intensive product experiences with clear customer value, outcomes, and craft.
  • 10+ years of product design experience leading complex enterprise, platform, or technical products from strategy through delivery.
  • Production experience designing AI-enabled products or ML-powered workflows, including trust, control, personalization, review, feedback, adoption, and failure states.
  • Strong UX/UI skills across interaction design, visual craft, systems thinking, and data visualization for complex workflows and decision support.
  • Technical fluency with AI, data, platform, and engineering partners, with experience aligning teams through research, prototyping, AI tools, lean UX, and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience mentoring designers, raising craft quality, and using AI tools to explore, prototype, test, communicate, and improve collaboration.

Please include a link to your online portfolio. Only those applications that include portfolios will be considered.
