Job description

Description
The Department of Biology at the University of Washington invites applications for 100% FTE Teaching Associate non-tenure positions in Biology, commencing on a rolling basis usually on Sept 16 at the beginning of the academic year. We are looking for candidates at the rank of Teaching Associate to teach a subset of the Introductory series labs (Biology 180 Introductory Evolution and Ecology, Biology 200 Introductory Molecular and Cellular Biology, or Biology 220 Introductory Physiology) which may vary quarter-by-quarter. The initial appointment will be for teaching in one of these courses during Autumn quarter with a chance for renewal to the end of the academic year (15 June) pending satisfactory performance reviews. Therefore, the position covers 9 months of the academic year. The successful candidate will benefit from interactions with faculty in the Department of Biology whose research areas include biology education, ecology, evolution, molecular, cellular, physiological biology.
Teaching Associates will teach undergraduate biology labs in conjunction with a large lecture course each quarter. Associates teach 6x 3-hour labs per week and work closely to support the 144 students (generally STEM majors) in those labs each quarter. The overall team of Associates rotates between these three courses each quarter to best mediate changing enrollments and their own interest areas. Teaching Associates in Introductory Biology work with the large teaching team for their course as well as the greater Instructional Support side of the department.
The duties for this position include:
Teaching weekly labs, including
Cleaning and setting up labs
Instructing labs, including initial small lectures and leading lab activities
Maintaining safety standards for all students and staff
Attending the associated course lecture 4-5 times per week and assisting with exam proctoring
Coordinating with instructors and coordinators to maintain course cohesion
Holding office hours, engaging in online platforms, administrating course grades and answering student emails
Meeting weekly with the teaching team under the direction of the Course Coordinator to learn lab teaching specifics for the week, give feedback, learn upcoming lab exercises, and practice teaching skills.
This opportunity will be open until filled, however equal first priority will be given to complete applications. Continuation beyond the first quarter is conditional on satisfactory performance reviews.
The salary range for this position is $5,597 - $5700 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Appointments of candidates holding only a bachelors degree will occur at the lower end of the salary range.
